THE TOMB OK EVE
JUST outside the gates of Jeddah
is an ancient cemetery one of
the holy places of the east. Ac-
cording to tradition It Is the burial
place of Eve Darwin and Spencer to
the contrary. Here the pious Mo
hammedan tells you the body of our
first mother was borne by her be- j
reaved husband and grandsons. The
crumbling tomb was built above her
by them the exact dimensions of the
departed. If you believe the story
you must admit that the race has de
generated; tne tomb la over roe paces
long.
the
tfundreds of devout pilgrims visit
omb on their way to Mecca.
every year. Brown-skinned and
white they come to jraie or pray near
the ashes of the mother of the world.
Curious skeptical Europeans swar-
thy devotees from the heart of the
Sahara soft-voiced Indians as varied
a family gathering as yon could find.
For hours the piona pilgrims kneel In
the dust under the hot Arabian sky.
The combined sound of their prayers
drifts out over the ancient cemetery
disturbing the repose of the new-
comers in the field. The old-timers
do not care; they are used to it.
Near the southern end of the long
tomb is a small square tower with
narrow iron barred windows. To the
sratinp are tied hundreds of tiny
strips of cotton cloth fastened there
by childless Mohammedan women as
an offering to the first mother. The
bits of cloth entirely cover the Iron
of the bars fluttering like tiny ban-
ners as the hot winds sweep over the
cemetery from the Red Ses. They
are the touch of pathos that sur-
rounds every Mohammedan shrine.
The cemetery with its crumbling
tombs is the pride of Its neighbor-
ing city. Jeddah. The traveler who
would fall to visit It would be re-
garded with contempt by the citizens.
His action would be looked upon as
showing a. lack of proper respect for
his orlcinsl ancestor. Though the
true Mohammedan regards yon as an
unbeliever he still admits your dis-
tant kinship.
