the hospitals of New York, it was shown that pa-
tients undergoing surgical operations, and* whose
mouths were previously cleaned, showed fewer
respiratory complications following anesthetization
than did those who went to operation with decay d
teeth or bad gums.
To this problem an excellent and highly signifi-
cant contribution was recently made by Doctors C.
C. Okell and S. D. Elliott of London. Their investi-
gation was as ingenious as it appeared simple aid
logical.
They took samples of blood from the arms of
138 patients undergoing dental extraction. One sam-
ple was taken shortly before the operation, and the
second within five minutes after the extraction. I
These samples of blood were incubated so as lo
cultivate any bacteria that might be present.
The treatment is such that when bacteria are
present in the blood, they are enabled to grow, mul-
tiply and form demonstrable colonies.
The 138 cases which were studied were divided
into three groups. One gwup, 40 in number, had
marked gum disease and underwent multiple ex-
tractions. The second group, 60 in number, had tuft
moderate gum disease and also underwent multiple
extraction. The third group, numbering 38, was
without detectable gum disease, and suffered ex-
traction of one sr more teeth.
