A nd don’t forget stamps
Even though it’s just the early part of November, there are people in town
already thinking of Christmas. They say you should be thinking that way, too.
Mercedes Postmaster Mrs. Nadine Crenshaw and the rest of the local mail
crew have provided the following schedule to assure timely arrival of Christmas
mail to overseas points.
“To be sure of delivery in time for Christmas,” says Mrs. Crenshaw, “mail
should be deposited before the following dates:

THE FONDEST OF MEMORIES were recalled by this group of players from the 1957 District, Bi-District and Regional
Championship Team from Mercedes High School. The six above were special guests at the Tiger Pep Rally Friday and spoke
to 1977 players and fans as part of the Homecoming activities of the Class of ’58. Above, left to right, are Joe Gonzales,
David Jones, Albert Zavala, Jim Norris, Mark Clifford and Ruben Hinojosa. That 1957 1 football team won 12 games in a
row, scoring 422 points to 51 for opponents, before losing to West Columbia by a 7-6 score on a rain-soaked field. The 23
player squad was the only one in Tiger history to reach the quarter finals. Games, and scores, for the 1957 season were Rio

together with representatives from other
civic organizations have agreed to
accept area responsibilities during the
city’s clean-up and beautification
campaign, reports Mrs. Ruth Lentz,
president of the Chamber of Commerce,
sponsoring group for the drive.
Mrs. Lentz says that Mrs. Bobbie
Jones has accepted the post of

Mrs. Dorothy Bazar is heading up the
litter collection drive and Rita Gonzales,
Letty Mata and Rene Serna are student
activity coordinators. Mrs. Helen Evans
and Mrs. Liz Montemayor are publicity

The city wide drive began last week
and is to end at Thanksgiving time.
“It’s because we want to show the
rest of the world we are proud of our
community that so many people have
volunteered their time,” says Mrs. Lentz
“We want people to think of Mercedes
as a clean and beautiful town.”

Tiger foe
Turnovers, six in all, coming with
alarming regularity contributed to a
shutout defeat of the Tigers last Friday
by an aroused Falfurrias team.
A near capacity Homecoming crowd
watched Mercedes lose by a 24-0 score
to the Jerseys in a game coaches could
only describe as “disappointing”.
“We lost five fumbles and had one
pass intercepted,” commented coach
Juan Salinas. “That’s six chances we
could have had at their end zone...and
six chances we let them have at ours.
We can’t win football games and give
that much away.”
Tigers not only came up short on the
scoreboard, but also found themselves
losing four players to injuries; Clint
Hoverson, knee injury; Mario Garcia,
another knee problem; Chris Villarreal,
neck injury; and Oscar Gorena, severe
gash on chin. All are listed as doubtful
for this week’s game against Edcouch-
Elsa.
“We’ll try to plug holes with those
we have left,” says Salinas, “but it’ll
take a super effort to make up for the
losses we have to injuries.” Salinas says
he’ll go with Juan Zavala at Hoverson’s
defensive tackle spot, put Rey Renteria
at center for Villarreal, have either Mark
Hinojosa or Neto Gutierrez fill in for
Gorena and run Gilbert Gomez at
Garcia’s post.
Mercedes, with its 3-5 record, will
travel this week to Yellowjacket Stadium
to face an Edcouch-Elsa team that has
won no district games and has compiled
an overall 2-6 record for the year. The
’Jackets are better than their record, say
Mercedes coaches, and they have a good
passing game.
It won’t be easy, say coaches, but we
can win this one with a good--and
steady—team effort.

City buys
new meters
Routine business was acted upon by
Mercedes city commissioners in a
regular meeting, Tuesday night.
Bids were accepted for the purchase
of 100 water meters from Corad
Corporation of Miami, Florida at a cost
of $25.97 per meter. That price was 97
cents higher than the lowest bid
submitted, but commissioners took
Public Utilities Director Ricardo Reyna’s
recommendation that the Corad product
b selected. Reason for choosing the
firm, he says, is the five year
“unconditional” guarantee offered and
the firm’s policy of paying $5 each for
junked meters.
Resolutions were approved author-
izing a contract between the city and
J.T. Worsham and Raul Morales for1
installation of 270 feet of eight inch
sewer pipe and 230 feet of four inch pipe
on an easement of the residents’
property. Cost to the residents for the
project is $1,198.50, half to be paid by
each. Work is to be done on Chapmar
and Alamo Streets.
Tabled were items concerning
Chamber of Commerce funding, the
granting of a quitclaim deed to Armando
Martinez, awarding of water filtration
plant bids, a personal appearance by a
representative of the Mercedes Youth
Service and the sale of five community
development program lots and a portion
of a sixth to Marvin Schwarz.
Commissioners absent from the
meeting were Ramon Gonzales and Juan
Vasquez.

juvenile officer and “thanks to H.E.B.
for the nice letter.”
The police chief also says there will
be some changes in traffic control details
beginning sometime .soon. He says his
officers will begin enforcing the
“one way-do not enter” sign at the
entrance to the North high school
parking lot from Florida street. Citizens
complaints, says the chief, have pointed
out the hazard that is created.
The chief adds that stop signs on
Tenth Street at the intersection of Tenth
and Ohio Avenue have been removed.
Stop signs remain on the Ohio Avenue at
that intersection.
