seldom has a bitten person

RESOLUTION # 526
BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MERCEDES,
TEXAS, that the City of
Mercedes, Texas, lease, at no
cost to the City of Mecedes,
Texas, acreage designated at
the west 9.6 acres out of Lot
3, Block 64, Capisallo Sub-
division, Mercedes, Texas,
from Mr. Rodolfo Arguelles of
Mercedes, Texas, to be used
as a sanitary landfill, the term
of said lease to be effective
until such time that the City
of Mercedes, Texas, give
thirty [30] days prior notifi-
cation of its intent to
terminate said lease.
Better than the finest first
aid or medical treatment is
prevention of the bite
occurring in the first place. Be
extremely careful where you
put your hands, feet and
behind when outdoors. As
much as possible avoid dense
grass and weeds and keep to
open ground. In walking along
a game or cattle trail
remember snakes lay along
these trails waiting for rats
and rabbits.
It is widely known among
authorities that more persons
die from snakebites in Texas
than in any other state in the
nation. This startling fact
should encourage every
outdoorsman to obtain a
thorough working knowledge
of the correct first aid
treatment, so he will be
prepared to act promptly in
case of an emergency.
Authorities agree that a
constriction band should be
immediately placed between
the bite and the heart and the
victim kept calm and as
immobile as possible. A
shoelace, handkerchief,

piece of clothing will make a
suitable band. It should be
loosened for two minute
periods every 15 minutes. It
should never be kept on for
over four hours.
It is does not delay getting
the victim medical attention,
make positive identification of
the snake as different types
requires different treatment.
And too, maybe the snake was
non-poisonous. Often the
beneficial bull snake is
mistaken for a rattler and he
is very aggressive.
For many years now I have
made it a practice to wear
snake leggings whenever I am
in the brush and prefer the
canvas type which afford more
comfort than the aluminum
ones. I wear them in
practically all kinds of weather
as they are also good
protection against thorns and
cactus.
Do not be misled by some
people who parrot that
rattlesnakes only move when
surface temperatures range
between 70 and 88 degrees I
have seen too many of them
lying in the lee of a rock in
the sunshine when it was
plenty cold. And they looked
dangerous to me.
I not only dislike venomous
snakes I am very afraid of
them. I read recently where
the Parks & Wildlife people
declared a certain species of
rattlers found in the trans-
Pecos area as an endangered
species. If I came across one
of them he would certainly be
endangered and I only wish
all of them were extinct. I will
do my best to make them so.
But the presence of snakes
in our environment should not

more important, he should

before it can happen. This
means knowing where to
expect poisonous snakes, how
to avoid them, and how to

venomous kind found in the

Experience has shown the

dangerous and so is the

insulate the ice from the flesh.
