HOUSTON IB - Oil companies
have a big sales job on their hands
for spring and summer months.
Gasoline stocks last week climb-
ed to an all-time high of 180,384,000
barrels.
The gasoline consuming season
normally runs from April through
September but, as yet, there has
been no strong Indication of a
boom among vacationing motor-
ists.
The summer situation indicates
strong competition among gasoline
marketers. Refiners probably will
continue reduced gasoline output
rates until stocks drop to a more
practical working level,.
Sales personnel in general are
agreed competition will be fierce.
It may have been coincidental
but one company (the Texas Co.)
chose the April opening of the
heavy consumption season to place
a new premium grade gasoline on
the market and launch its biggest
sales and advertising campsign in
history.■
it is too early for tourist bureaus
operated by a number of oil com-
panies to have any definite indica-
tion of anticipated summer travel
trends.
. Statistics for January - March
from two such bureaus are in
sharp contrast.

national basis reported its requests

22 the figure had declined to the
lowest point of the season, 142,334,-

A similar seasonal drop this

A spokesman for another com-

Exception In
Song Writing
g HOLLYWOOD IM-All of us have
k focrot yen to write songs, but
we seldom do anything about it.
Peggy Lee la the exception.
The blonde songstress has
stopped in and succeeded in what
is virtually a man’s world — the
song-writing field. You can count
the successful gal song writers on
a hand or two and have some
fingers left over. But Peggy is
turning out lyrics with top com-
posers and is all hepped up about
“Eventually I’d like to give up
singing, except on records,” she
says. "I’d like to devote most of
my time to writing songs.”
That time may not be far away.
When she was married to guitarist
Dave Barbur, she turned out a
number of hits like "Manana” and
“It’s a Good Day ” ,
Recently she finished the prize
assignment of penning' words for
Sonny Burke's songs in the forth-
coming Walt Dianey cartoon fea-
ture, “The Lady and the Tramp.”
She also enacts the voices of a
human, two cats and a somewhat
racy poddle that has been named
Peg in her honor.
She is working on songs for the
UPA cartoon firm, makers of Ma-
• goo and Gorald MeBoing - Being.
And top tunesters like Nicholas
Brodsky ("Be My Love”) and Na-
_ cio Herb Brown (“Temptation”)
have sent her melodies to lyri-
cize.
“I get a big kick out of turning
out songs,” she told me. “I hope
someday to give up touring and
settle down. I don't mind working

. THEIR BABY LOST IN THE SEA—Mr. and Mrs. John McDonald, frantic with fear
that their baby is lost in the pounding surf near their beach home in Hermosa Beach,
Calif., turned to each other as they raced up and down the beach. The child, Michael,
19 months old, had strayed from the fenced yard of his home a few minutes before.
A passerby told police she saw the tot in the water. The boy has not been found and
presumably was swept out to sea. This picure was taken by Jack Gaunt, Los Angeles
