will eliminate $182,370.84 of its
debts within the next twelve
months.
Of the Utilities Department’s
million-plus income, $193,689.46
will be transferred to the General
Government for its operational ex-
penses.
The General Government fund,
the "little” half of the budget, will
handle $541,839 during the year.
The two big items that give the
local government its money to op-
erate are:
One, the transfer of funds from
the Utilities Department.
And two, taxes—which will pour
b
Some of the other items to be
purchased will not be immediately
visible to the public, but are in-
cluded for betterment of the city.
Some of these items are sewage
lift stations, extensions of utility
lines, additional fire protection, a
cooling tower and other mechani-
cal improvements at the power
plant, payment on the city’s wells,
and power plsnt engines.
Burrowing into the details of the
1954 55 budget, the Utilities De-
partment and the General Govern-
ment are the two large categories
into which the document is di-
vided.
The Utilities Department is the
hesviest end of the budget—$1,200,-
000 making up the expected ex-
penditures.
Breaking down the civic budget
in the Utilities Department, $160,-
710 will be needed to generate the
local supply of electricity, while
$76,560 is needed to produce the
city’s water.
Distribution of the electricity
will cost local government $35,500
while distribution of wster is not
so expensive—only $5,800.
In the Utilities Department, ad-
ministration and services will call
for expenditures of $104,730.
Biggest item in that sum is for
meter resding snd repairing which
is estimated to cost $22,000. Billing
snd collecting for the department’s
services will cost the city $20,000.

By SCOTT BROOKSHIRE
Record-Chronicle Staff Writer
Denton s City Commissioners
felt Tuesday night after approving
the coming year’s budget that they
had made two major! accomplish-
ments.
First, they were only eight days
into the fiscal year when the bud-
get was approved—a feat that is
the exception rather than the rule
in Denton.
And second, they had given sal-
ary increases to the majority of
the city’s employes and had pro-
vided for a number of civic im-
provements without raising the
tax rate. -
But they realized that even
though their job was finished, there
was a lot of room for problems to
arise.
In the budget, which handles
more than $1,700,000, only about
$600 was left over when the final
stamp of approval was given.
But the margin of financial safe-
ty was actually larger—a fund al-
ready set up for emergenices con-
taining $20,697.05.
This "reserve for contingencies”
will have to take care of all fi-
nancial needs that arise within the
next twelve months.
Looking at brighter prospects,
Denton will get $42,150 worth of
mercury vapor lights on main
streets in the city.
