MEXICO'S MONEY PROBLEM.

Mexico City Feb.S Great inter-5iS

Mm Americnn Government in behalf S

of silver and President Kooseveirs
"ready willingness to aid in the
solution of a jjrblem of such vital
importance to this country is creat-
ing an excellent feeling. The atti-
tude of the American Government
is considered most friendh.
The monetary comission to study
the silver question here is a local
measure which attracts favorable
attention. Not for many years has
so important and representative a
body of banking industrial and
commercial exjwrts been convoked
and it is believed to augur much
much good in bringing about a
better jiopular understanding here
of the undertying difiiculties at-
tending the settlement of -this com-
plicated matter. The Government
has won praise by its judicious ac-
tion for now it is seen that it pro-
poses to act only on advice from
the most representative men.
In all lines of national activity
all intelligent persons here desire
to bring about an adjustment that
while giving stability to the silver
peso will still be favorable to a con-
tinued investment of foreign capital.
One of the questions of greatest
present interest and one Avhich the
commission will investigate is the
present quantity of silver money in
the country. Notwithstanding the
fact that many new banks have
come into existence it is pointed
out b' Finance Minister Limantour
that it is still the custom in many
parts of the country among mer-
chants and wealthy private persons
to keep large amounts of coined
silver in private safes. An effort
will be made to ascertain scientifi-
cally the amount of currency both
metallic and paper wh'ch the coun-
try requires for its business this
being an important fact having
bearing on the settlement of the
monctarr question for Mexico. The
commission will also inquire info!
the amount of money spent abroad
by wealthy Mexicans living in
foreign countries and generally will
endeavor to accumulate ample and
complete statistics bearing on every
phase of the silver question as af-
fecting Mexican people locally and
in their foreign trade.
Francisco Iturri avIio died in
France -was one of the greatest
landlords here being known as "the
Astor of Mexico City." He had
resided in France for nearly a
quarter of a century. He leaves an
estate valued at something like
$r000000 and had city property
hotels minesr haciendas etc.
