William Haines Provides Much
Hilarity, Many Thrills and
a Winning Love Story
Laughter on horseback, ro
mance on the polo field, with a
hero of the "400" who rated 100
per cent in the night clubs.
That in brief is William
Haines' new starring picture fur
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, now
playing at the Crystal Theatre,
a comedy that positively scin-
tillates with laughs, that thrills
with love interest and vibrates
with excitement
Haines has established for
himself a reputation of turning
qut consistently good pictures,
but” wiht "The Smart Set" he
outdoes himelf. The story is
that of smart society and, a mil-
lionaire’s son who because of a
natural gift for polo makes the
all-American team for the inter-
national cup contest with the
British.
How his own cockiness first
wins him a place on the squad
and then loses both his father's
respect his position and the girl
he loves', only to win it all back
and more at the crucial last in-
stantof one of the greatest dra-
matic polo, struggles ever film-
ed, makes an enthralling story
which would win and hold inter-
est for its dramatic story alone.
However that isn't the half of it
for “The Smart Set” Is a pic-
ture of a million laughs as well.
Alice Day is the society hero-
ine that furnishes a perfect foil
for Haines’ love-making. Ho-
bart Bosworth as the father,
and Jack Holt as the sympathe-
tic heavy, are marvelous in
their portrayals. Constance
Howard and Coy Watson, Jr., in
small roles demonstrate their
ability as troupers. Jack Con-
way furnishes the best direction
