The city council meets this after-
noon. Choice nuts just received Lay-
ton & Haley- .
Spring has returned again. It is
hoped it may not be so shy this
time.

The Rio Grande train with pas-
sengers and express for the steamer
left here at eleven o'clock this morn-
ing. .

The brick cottage on the corner
of Levee and Sth. streets belonging
to Cant. Dalzell has been rented by
Mrs. Lily Sebree who moved into
it yesterday.

ing up the fields sufficiently for
ploughing and planting !and work
is now being actively pushed in the

ing decided to retire from business.

klin who U under indictment for
the killing of Private Brady of the
Fourth Infantry has been arrested

The steam lighter Luzon and sail
lighter Adelaida came inside the
harbor this afternoon at half past
two each with a load of the Man-
teo"s freight. It is .expected that
the Manteo would come inside this
afternoon and that she will sail in
the morning for Galveston. The
passengers were still at tho Point
at the hour named but will proo-
ably board the steamer later.

John Box arrived here this morn
ing from Point Isabel with two car
loads of fat beef cattle which he
will ship to New Orleans tomorrow.
He was on the road eleven days
and says it only failed to rain on
him one night during the trip.
Maj. J. B. Armstrong and son
Charles were in Alice this week
delivering some 600 head of cattle
recently sold to Gunter & Jones
and which were received here by
their foreman Wiley Seago who
took the stock .to the Shaeffer
pasture. y
Mr. R. Joseph the monument
and tombstone man will be here
on the 4th. of April. Reserve your
orders for him. He does good work

The Brownsville road.

Maj. J. B. Armstrong informs us
that the chiefs of the Brownsville
railroad are in Waco; that it is ex
pected the preliminary survey will
reach Brownsville about April loth
and then the route from Driscoll's
ranch to the Nueces river will be re-
surveyed on account of some error
which prevented the road striking
the ranch at the desired point. He
also stated that Col. Lott has pro
mised to begin the construction of
the road along the survey already
made before running the prelimi
nary line to Houston.

Sergt. Geo. Link of the Fourth
Infantr- left by this steamer for
Washington to spend a furlough
before sailing for Manila. Sergt.
Link is an old-timer in the service
and expects to be retired in three
years. He received his discharge
lately and re-enlisted for another
term in the Philippines.
F. Heubner of Bay City Texas
arrived by last night's stage and
is staying at the Miller. Mr.
Heubner was here some time ago
on a prospecting tour and his return
shows that he was interested. He
will probably spend several months
here and Tiie Herald hopes that
it may be able to report ere long
that Mr. Heubner has invested in a
big tract "f rich Rio Grande land
and concluded to settle in this section.
