In his address. General Sickles said
in.r-blowing up of the Maine by
Samish hands nnd by Spanish orders
sounded the death knell of Spanish
rule on American soil—a rule which
should have been ended long before.
It was declaration of war upon the
United States which this country was
not slow to heed."
It was announced that the monu.
mint would be completed by next
autumn. It will include a phylon for-
ty-four feet high, topped by a bronze
group cast from the guns recovered
from the sunken Maine, representing
('olumbia triumphant As this
will be thirteen feet high, the hefFht

NEW YORK, Feb 15 —The price of
artificial ice here is to be advanced
25 per cent, or from 32 to $2.50 a ton,
on March 1, notwithstanding there has
been harvested thia year a record crop
of the natural product. Notice of the,
advance has been given by producers;
to wholesale dealers. Uncertainty of
the outlook and prospects of a big coal:
strike, one of the manufacturers says,
caused the decision to boost the price.
