though the White House would not
comment upon the announcement from
New York friends of Mr. Taft said the
latter had hoped th* Democrats would
not bring on a further "disturbance of
business." Krnator McCumber of North
Dakota, Republican, expressed another
Republican view, namely, that he fa-
vored "getting it over with.” In all
Democratic quarters, however, the ex-
tra session was strongly approved.
Congress will begin in a few weeks
preparing for th* arduous work of an-
other tariff revision. The approaching
short session, which ends March 4, :
when the Republican administration 1
guea out. will be angroaeeO with annual
appropriation bills and routine leg-
islation; but the Ways and means com-
mittee of the House will probably be-
gin work on the new tariff bills early
in January.
Democratic Leadr Underwood, chair-
man of the ways and means commit-
tee, is expected in Washington next
woek. Members of this committee,
charged with the duty of framing all
tariff biUa. agree with the position
taken by President-elect Wilson that
i repeated Investigations of tariff sched-
ules have made unnecessary a long in-
vestigation. The ways and means com-
mittee will begin in January probably
upon the wool, cotton or metal tariff
billa.
