On To Brownsville
San Antonio Express-:
Two railroads are. now heading
for Brownsville and the construc-
tion companies are making the dust
flv in tb effort to reach the metro-
polis of the lower Rio Grande with
the utmost dispatch.
For years the cry of "On to
wn-viilr'' was cchoet1. .V.ul re-
echoed until it died away in the
distance and those who had bren
most vociferous in urging the need
of railroad communication between
the metropolis of the State and the
Rio Grande metropolis had almo?t
desoaired of seeinc such a railroad
materialize.
Then there was a sudden awaken-
ing. After the abandonment of sev-
eral enterprises that appeared to be
fairly promising-; for a time the
theater of effort was shifted from
San Antonio to the lower coast
country and through the energy and
activity of Colonel Uriah Lott and
others it was not Jong before there
was something doing. The St.j
Louis Texas & Mexico Railroad j
Company was organized to build a Jo
line from a point on the New York '
Texas & Mexican Railroad to'
Brownsville and in a surprisingly
short time after the movement was
initiated a construction company !
was in the field and the work of
building the road was under way. I

Rio Grand Railroad.
Pass Railway Company began pre-
parations for extending its line from
Alice to Brownsville. Surveyors
were put in the field and after some
unavoidable dqlays the construction
got to work.
Now two construction companies 0n and after Sepf 17tbj 1fK)3
are pushing the work of railroad regnlar passenger trains will

and each compa'ny is striving to be
first to announce jits arrival at the

of the locomotive;
So Brownsville is assured of rail-.
road coramuriication with the out-
side world before very long and
what is better of competition in
railroad traffic that will not leave
her at the mercy of an' monopol-
istic corporation.
