Development of more and better

J. Ellers, president of McKean-Eilers

that opinion when asked recently
what he thought would expand Aus-
ein more than anything else.
' "Oonsiderable discusaton has been
haa by certain interested citizens con-
kerning the proposed extension of the
san Antonio & Aransas Pass to Aus-
kin from Lockhart,” Mr. Ellers be-
gan. "This would certainly be a great
boon to Austin, could such a thing be
ancemplished. It would help the re-
[tall trade here fully as much as the
wholosalers and jobbers.
[ "Think what a wonderful trade ter-

aiready here. It would give Austin an

this way may find pleasure facilities
here as advantageously as elsewhere.
“Deep Eddy has become a popular
pleasure resort where during the sum-
mer men and women and their chil-
dren may enjoy the pleasures of swim-
ming and bathing. Free motion pic-
ture shows, watermelon parties, open
air band concerts and other similar
forms of amusement may bo found
here and are readily accessible by
street car. Each year the number
of campers along the banks of Deep
Eddy is increasing, another evidence
that this pleasure resort to winning
the Increased appreciation of our vis-
itors and our residents during the hot
summer monthe:
"The city administration has taken
a step forward in providing the dty
with a wonderful pleasure resort in
Barton Springs. Improvements made
at that place during the past eighteen
months has transformed an ordinary
bathing pool into a modern pleasure
resort where thousands of people each
year enjoy the privileges provided
there. The planting of grasi and
trees and installation of private water
system was a commendable step taken
by the city in its program of beautify-
ing Barton Springs.
"There is no reason why Austin
should not be an attractive place for
tourists to visit. This city po—w
seenio beauties such as no other city
to the state can claim. The railroads
have recognized that fact by making
Austin a regular stopover point on all
tourist tickets. All we need to do to
to boost our city and its beauties every
time we get a chance."
The McKean-Eilers concern to one
of the largest wholesale dry goods dis-
tributing houses in Central Texas,
which has built up a large trade all
over this section. It is one of the
oldest concerns of its kind in Texas
having been established about 1887.

Austin have had to pay more for cab-

hgh freight rates.
I "Take our own business ana prac-
etca example of the need for better
transportation facilities. It requires
boverat days for a shipment of goods
khat we- ship to reach a customer in
seguin, Bastrop or Lockhart, all bo-
Pause it must be shipped over two
pines of railroad before it reaches its
destination. Yet Seguin is only about
qrty miles from Austin and can be
Feached by motor truck In a few hours

time that would result to merchants
if Austin with ths addition of trans-

exphnalon, theregore, depends in large
masure on securing additional direct
Froutes to points in Austin’s trade ter-
ritory so that deltveries may be facil:
itated and the volume of business will
automatically increase as a result.
I "That such a program bids fair to

( Mr. Ellers also pointed out that the
[people of Auetin should boost numer-

uss and mentioned specitically its
bathing resorts, Deep Eddy and Bar-

turers of high grade platinum and
gold work, engravers of stesi station-
ery dies, and specialty workers of
crest and heraldic engraving, main-
tain the only business of this kind in
Austin, and rival any firm of their
kind in the South in the high class
quality of tbs work done. They have
selected Austin as a good field for
this class of work and occupy the
location at 722 Congress Avenue. The
second floor of this building is un-
dergoing rapid repairs and the high-
est grade of machinery and other
equipment used In their work is be-
ing installed.
The owners of this firm do their
own work with the aid of cepable
local assistants. They are both vet-
eran jewelry workers of ths North,
where they obtained their education
and practical trsining in the work.
Mr. Barrett spent three years in ths
Hamilton School of Art in the study
of special designing snd remodeling
of diamond jewelry. Later he entered
the practical trade in large concerns
of the New England states. Mr.
Reau learned the trade in the larger
factories of the North.
It is now possible for the lovers of
high grads platinum and gold jewelry
work who live in other parts of ths
