climb from the bottom to .the top of a
business at a much more rapid rate
than his fellow worker without the
education. He has the theory which,
with the aid of practical tips that
come in any business, makes him a
capable man and an all-around busi-
ness man of the most sueceesful kind.
"The great failure of the college
graduate of today is his belief that he
should enter the business as a success
at the very top. In realty his place
is at the bottom with the other be-
ginners. If ho has the ability that his
college training should give him, then
he will go to the top fast enough, and
In so doing gain the benefit of much
practical knowledge."
Mr. Yeates emphasised the fact that
the world s hungry today and at all
times for able men. Every store in
the South is in dire need of trained
men at the top of their business, he
stated. Mr. Yeates stressed the fact
that college training alone would not
fit a man for business. He has to be
a man in the first place, and the
qualifications such as ambition, per-
sonality and high ideals are neces-
sarily required along with the higher
training to make the business man
that is wanted today, according to the
ideas of the local manager.
“The men who are most in demand
today are those who are willing to pay
the price, who are willing to begin at
the bottom and develop themselves
as the business is learned," Yeates
explained. "He must start in a place
where he can learn the very lowest
fundamentals and grasp every bit of
the practical business knowledge that
goes to make a competent manager in
the future. College men must not

Because he devoted most of his time
during the month of May in the in-
terest of his candidacy for attorney
general of Texas, Dan Moody, present
district attorney of Travis and wn-
liamsop counties, Saturday returned to
the comptroller's department a war-
rant drawn in his favor for $41.66,
■ which represented his constitutional
salary for May.
“I return this warrant to be can-
celed," Moody advised the comptroller.
: "I am a candidate for attorney general
and my time during May, with the ex-
ception of three days, has been devoted
to my campaign. The state will pay
me for the three days’ service under
the per diem bill.
"The state does not owe me the reg-
ular monthly salary covered by this
warrant because I have not been called

as stated, and my time and energies

"The time has come in the business
world when competition is so keen that -------------

compete with the university graduate
and produce the right kind of results,
Mr. Yeates stated. He spoke from the
standpoint of the people as a class and
not of the individual, he stated, for
there are exceptional persons who are
born with"the making of a winning
man and they will succeed along with
any one whether or not they are well
educated. "But from the general
standpoint,” he continued, “the man
with a college training has too many
advantages over the uneducated fellow.

there were few highly educated men,

What is the value of an education
and what is the difference between the
value of a man with a college edu-
cation and the man with no theoretical
training?
This is the question that has been
a subject for debate from the time
when schools were first established,
and yet, according to what business
men of authority aay concerning this
topic, there is no base for a eom-
parison in the least sense. Business
men of the old school and type, who
have risen to their realm of standing
in the business world by taking every
stop one at a time and taking the
knocks that went with every step, are
wont to take issue with the person up-
holding what they call the educated
man, and demand men in their busi-
ness that have begun virtually at the
bottom of the business. Still, regard-
less of their being in a position to
know the situation, it is today prac-
tically universally conceded that the
man with the education is the man of
the day and the man the world U
demanding.
Statements made recently by many
of the leading business heads of the
country should go to encourage the
young college graduates who are pre-
paring to make their debut in the busi-
ness world in that the educated man
has been given the credit of practi-
cally every advantage over the fellow
without an education.
Students of the University of Texas
might be Interested in knowing what
one of the leading business men of
Austin has to say regarding the edu-
cated man and his advantages in the
business world today. J. J. Yeates,
manager of the E. XL Scarbrough A
Sons department store, praised highly
the ability of the college man im his
business relations. In speaking of an
article written recently by James
Simpson, president of Marshall Field
A Co.. of Chicago, in which the worth
of the college man was very logically
outlined in comparison with the man
who merely came up with the business.
Mr. Yeates stated that no bustness
man would fail to corroborate what
nurse, the report filed with the local
health bureau Saturday, May 31, shows.
During May 130 visits were made to
Travis county homes by the health
nurse, including sixty-two instruction
visits, five investigation visits, fifty-
four visits for miscellaneous visits and
nine visits to schools of the country.
In these visits 190 children were ex-
amined, 134 of which were found with
physical defects. Five patients were
accompanied to the City Hospital by
the nurse and two patients were taken
to doctors.
Chief among the different phases of
work done during the past month was
the work of organizing health clubs
for the purpose of promoting health
care and precaution against disease in
the homes. In these clubs meetings
will be held at which the county nurse
will be present to give instruction lec-
tures in order to inform the parents
as to proper child care. Efforts are
being made by the health nurse to
eliminate much of the ill health and
