Students rate Malta program a success
By Arthur Grimaklo
Staff writer
South Texas College
of Law with Golden State Uni-
versity sponsored this four
week study abroad program in
Malta located in the Mediter-
ranean Sea.
Three courses were of-
fered: International Business
Litigation, International Envi-
ronmental Law and Law of the
Sea, and International Human
Rights taught by our own Pro-
fessor Ursula H. Weigold.
Professor Weigold
said there were between 35-36
students in the program: 12
from South Texas, 3-4 from
other schools, and the rest from
Golden State.
Many of the students
took side trips to nearby Sic-
ily, Italy, Tunisia, and even
Egypt. She said that she was
pleased with the students work
given that there were so many
temptations so close by.
One of the South
Texas students was Monica
Thompson.
She said the trip over
to Malta was uncomfortable,
but there was a 17 hour lay
over in London which allowed
her to see Buckingham Palace,
the Parliament building, and
Scotland Yard.
Once in Malta, she
said it took her a bit to get used
to it.
Ms. Thompson said
she was expecting more of a
vacation resort, but she quickly
adjusted to the beautiful views,
sights, and weather. She also
said that the people of Malta
were very friendly, and she
would recommend the program
to others.
Another student from
South Texas, Ami Feltovich,
agreed the trip to Malta was
horrible and so was the return,
but Malta was great. Since
almost all the inhabitants are
fluent in English, communica-
tion was easy. "Malta was
verv user friendly," sir* . aid.
Ms. Feltovich also
said that she was able to get
housing off campus.
A three-bedroom and
two-bath apartment on the wa-
ter for $30 a day, and with six
roommates, it worked out to
only $6 per person (approxi-
mately $ 120 for the four week
semester).
She said the scuba div-
ing was "Trick" which trans-
lates into "gorgeous".
And when asked if she
would ever go back, she said,
"Oh yeah, absolutely, I would
go back in a heartbeat."
So for those adventur-
ous types looking for some-
thing to do next summer, Malta
is the island where fun and hard
work combined to become a
fulfilling experience.
