Life With OPS
The Oskaloosa, Iowa, Dally Herald recently ran an editorial
called "Life With OPS." It deals with some of the experiences a
very large department store has had with the price controls.
In one case, the store provided some emergency special services
tn getting a bride's trousseau ready in a rush. This Involved it
in a morass of complex OPS regulations—and four top execu-
tives had to spend most of a morning solving the problem. The
amount of executive salary spent was more than double the
store's bill to the bride.
In a far more important instance, OPS issued a certain order.
4 To comply with it, over 20,000 hours of work by section managers
and assistants was required. More than 20,000 sheets of carbon
papers and 26,000 pages’of forms were consumed. The store’s
clerical staff, though large, couldn’t handle the work alpne and
85,000 was spent for private stenographic services to help out
All told, it is estimated, this order cost the store several hundred
