Rush Wood, sports editor for

paper, has been named third
place winner in sports writing
at the Texas Interscholastic
League Press Conference held
recently at Austin.
Rush, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Irvin Wood of Richards, is a
basketball letterman and Is an
active member of the Pan Am-
erican Student Forum and the
Navasota Science Club.
He will serve as editor of the
Diamond-Back, the school pub-
lication, during the 1962-63

was recently awarded the honor
of "Airman of the Month” at
Beale Air Force SAC base, which
is located near San Francisco,
Calif.
Airman Horton received this
message in connection with the
award:
"This award has been bestow-
ed upon you because of the ex-
cellent knowledge you have of
your job and in the manner you
have performed your duties as
electronic communications and
crypto equipment repairman at
the San Francisco Air Defense
Sector."
Horton, the first married man
to win this honor, will go to a

A large crowd went to Shiro
Sunday night to hear Rev. Bruce
Wood as there were no services
at Methodist or Baptist Church.

spent the week-end at Pasadena
with their son and family, Mr.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Lucas and
baby of Huntsville and Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Bell and children of

John Franklin Stewart, age 77,
passed away at 12:30 p.m
Thursday, May 10, at the Braz-
os Valley Hospital. .
Mr. Stewart was born at
Philadelphia, Miss, on March 7,
1885, the son of Fannie Hensley
and John Allen Stewart. He had
been a resident of Navasota for
the past 37 years and was a
momber of the First Baptist
Church of Navasota at the time
of his death.
Prior to 1930, Mr. Stewart serv-
ed as Grimes County Sheriff for
four years. He had also been
deputy sheriff and constable for
Prorinct 3 at various times.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Sally Hurst Stewart of Na-

were in Huntsville Sunday for
the Military Day Review, R. O.
T. C. under the inspection of
Gen. Osborn, 4th army division.
Mitchell Beene is a member of
R. O. T. , C. and is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Hicks and is a
freshman at Sam Houston at
Huntsyille.
Mr. and Mrs. C. W Cook re-
ceived a message Friday that
their grandson, Wendell Beene,
son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W.
(Tom) Beene had suffered the
misfortune of getting a bone
bone broken in his leg, The

Park here Friday as the first
round of the four-team softball
league got underway.

until the fourth.
Sonny Novak rapped out a
home run with two men on base
and moved Pederson’s team into
a 3-3 tie with the Washington
