Thursday Night
in answer to your telegram of April 18 — re debates April 25 at Bryan and April 28
at Tyler. You have not yet appointed a representative to meet with mine to agree
on the issues to be debated, the rules for debate, an acceptable moderator, and a
date therefor. I realize your effort to fix dates, etc., without consultation is due
to your inexperience; If you seriously want a debate, which I doubt, you would have
been present at least one of the times that debates have been arrangd by the
County Farm Bureaus in Nacogdoches, Crockett, and Rusk, where the issues to be
debated were known and where an impartial moderator was present. Instead, in
each instance you sent a representative. I once again challenge you to accept only
one or all of such debates that may be set up. If you are willing to defend your sup-
port of the Civil Rights bill, and loans and gifts to Russia and other communist
countries and since you have no record to debate about, I would suggest either of
those subjects for debate.
