Cooperators of the Navasota
Soil Conservation District who
save a pasture of native range
grasses for winter forage re-
duce their feed bill and in-
crease their profits. Native
range grasses such as Little
Blue Stem and Indian Grass
stand up during the winter
and hold their leaves. This
type of forage saves not only
the cost of hay, but saves the
cost of labor of hay feeding.
Protein supplements such as
cotton seed cake or meal
should be fed to livestock
running on dry native forage
to provide needed protein and
increase their appetite. For a
winter feed savings defer a
native pasture during the
growing season.
