BITS OF INFORMAT
\ THE TEAPOT DOME SCANDAL The old folks bonneted and gray.
; . .It used to be, not so very long ago, that the.
corporations shunned publicity as a culprit the light
of lav. Thev held their meetings insidg locked
- - rooms and with the curtains drawn. The approach
of a reporter was the signal for sudden drying up
of the fountains of information.
, Today this is greatly changed. The great cr-
porati ns of the country, like United States Steel,
are now open to the public gaze almost as com-
pletely as the sessions of congress. Perhaps it is
2"2 becavse the stockholders number so many
thouands, and to get information to them publicity
is de irable. At any rate, the situation is much al-
tered, and the old days are coming to an end. Wow
there is often as much news in a business meeting
of a private corporation as in a common council
sesnion and quite often much more.
It might be said that for the newspaper man
q them are but two classes of people'in the world;
, one trying to get something into the paper, the
< other trying th keep something out. In 1924, the
corporations as a rule no longer belong to the lat-
ter qlass. Neither ean it be said to their discredit
that they are working the newspapers for free
apace.. In the sense we speak, they are in many
eases willing and glad to give to the public the
news of their business, whether it be favorable, or
otherwise.
