Considerable oxclteracnt was created to-day
by the report on tho streets or another out-
break of small-pox A I.ioiiTcoiiimlssloncrat
onco called upon tho Mayor and tho medical
olllclals. At the Mayor's olllco ho found
Oil. VMtlK'S IlEPOHT :
To tho Hon. J. H. French Mayor:
San Antonio. Kobruary 18. Sir I havo
visited the iiiiiu Ernest Marie aged '-7 years n
native of Iji Factte Louisiana laboring
under an attack of small-pox. Ho nppearH to
bo.lolng fairly well tinder tho circumstances
and Is In good spirits. Ilo does not wish to bo
removed rrom wheio ho Is which desire ho has
n right to enjoy without eausing detriment to
others. The wile desires to he in hlseomiiuny
and attend l.lni whloh deslro wo havo neither
wish nor right to prut out. They havo a child
who by my advice has been removed to an-
other family In order to bo attended to and not
to 1h exposed to Infection. The liouso where
thu man Is Is located at the comer of Salinas
and San Saba streets; it is an uullnlshcd brand
uuw building (plank) In which I caul ut scu
anything detrimental to health.
This case furnishes new material for rcllcc-
tlon ror 1 havo a decided opinion that It the
ease springs out or u different focus 1 rom oth-
ers wo have had to contend with In the Past and
It' I Judge correctly wo will have other eases
lieioabout. Thohouso In question Is kept as mi
eating resort lor a certain set of men railroad
hands from New Mexico among whom a soap
maker would not make a foi l uuo very soon.
These men and baggage come from
an Infected country and If not
careful their contact will dNcmlnuto
contagion In our homes. Tho topographical
locullty Is unfavorable to health being tu a
low marshy iiialiirh.us district aucloutly des-
ignated "Iji Uiguiia" (the lake). At the pre-
vious visitation that was the most fatal spot In
the city for the hat no or the lull dostrojer. for
to my certain knowledge from ouo house alouo
(the Esiiilvul) scroti were carried to tho grave.
Measures should bu taken to prevent a repl-
tltlou of thooxperienco wo hato had. I hato
my own Ideas on tho subject but not being
absolute I hiek the powerto net them out. Wo
look upon Jon as the wlu head for Instruction
us we yoursiilionllnates with good will and
energy will net your orders out.
Itcspeetlully. J. YlAtin. M. I).
Dr. Monger reports that a man mimed Harry
Hobb aged !i' years white living on North
Flores sheet Is infected with adlseaso that Is
suspected to bo small-pox but It Is not dcll-
nltely decided. Ilo also stated that tho barber
Millie said that n man named Dick Henry
a gambler at the (Ircen Front was Infected In
a llko maimer when ho cut hli l.alr. Special
examination will be made in these cases this
afternoon. Another man named James E.
Smith living on South Laredo street. In the
triangle formed nt tho Alaz.ui ditch was re-
ported as suspicious by Dr. Jones to tho city
and Is undoubtedly a easo ot small-pox.
The houses havo been Isolated tho yellow Hag
h raised and nil Is being done to prevent con-
tagion. In conversation with Dr. Vlado tho I.iniiT
cpminlsslonor was Informed that there were
unfortunately good grounds for touring that
other cases would arl'o from the new source of
contagion which might ho of serious charac-
ter and It Is only fair to state that Or. Vlado
piedlcted the outbreak which has now oc-
euned.
At a Into hour this afternoon Dr. Monger
reported thatalltho cases of supposed small-
pox wore really cases of measles.
