Nero used to watch the athletic
contests through a concave emer-
aid. The earliest recorded use of
cclored glass as spectacles is an
announcement by a Julius Aucott,
who, in 1561, advocated green
glass as being of ‘great public
utility and benefit."
Later, blue, gray and amber
were suggested for eye protection.
In 1885, Dr. William Thompson ot
Philadelphia decided ametnyst-
tinted glasses were best to reduce
glare. The color was not easily
procurable, so ingenious opticians
secured old window panes which
had turned an amethyst color by
long exposure to sunlight.
In 1909, Sir William Crookes, an
English physicist, made the first
scientific attempt to control light
by means of glass. His glass ab-
sorbed the invisible ultra-Violet or
sunburn rays.

t believe me or not The news stand
"vas piled high with chocolate ban.,
chewing gum and cigarets. Nobody
was lining up for any of these
things and if it hadn’t been for the
sailors you wouldn’t have known
there was a war cn.
The financiers, including Otis
A. Glazebrook. Jr., of New York,
who brought the $50,000,060 with
him, were standing around the plat
form talking about you-know-what:
Norfolk beef steaks.
Deluxe Brands
After a coule of hours of pal-
aver Glazebrook’s committee of
bond holders bought their rail-
’ road from the elderly auctioneer
, and it was time for a beer I had
a bottle of one ot those de luxe
■ brands I hadn't seen in two years.
For dinner I tried another res-

' By now, as you may have gath-
ered. I was feeling toe full t
worry much about the reason why.
I did talk to a Norfolk news-
paper man though, and he said
there never had been a shortage of
anything in Norfolk except Scotch
whiskey.
He said his wife never had to
serve him macaroni. He said he
understood the concentration ot
navy people in town caused the
government to shake its stumps in
a provisioning way. He said Norfolk
was a wonderful town.
Amen, said I, wiping the butter
off my chin.
