WEDNESDAY APRIL 14 1880.
SAN JACINTO.
One wcel from to-day occurs tlio semi-
centennial anniversary of the battle of
San Jnclnto. The veterans nlio took
part In that tunKiilnnry cn?nKcincnt
which decided tho late of TexnOiml
practically freed her from .Mexican
domination will revive with Juit prldo
the stirring scenrs of those dark ilnys
when the ltcpiibllo was takloK form and
successfully ntscrttns her right ns a
free nnd Independent commonwealth.
The change! thathavo marked this half
century since San Jacinto the rapid
strides this vigorous young State has
taken tlnce then the marvelous devel-
opment of her resources and tho rich
promises of her future have all so chal-
lenged the attention of her citizens that
there Is some danger of their forgetting
the early struggles through which nlio
passed and the debt of obligation she
owes to those who oflered their Uvea on
the altar of her Independence. The na-
tal days of nations and of common-
wealths should always be kept In per-
petual memory. They not only servo
to link us tenderly with the past but
they keep alive that spirit of patriotism
so essential totho well-being of all repre-
sentative governments. No more devoted
heroic patriotic and sclf-eacrlllclng
men ever battled for liberty nnd laid the
foundation of a free republic than those
who laid down their lives In the cauie
of Texan Independence. Those who
shared their dangers but survived them
were.tuelr worthy companions equally
entitled to share In their glory. To nil
who remain after the winnowing of half
a century on Time's threshing floor the
memories of this Immortal day will come
with startling distinctness as they re-
count Instill familiar ears the trngedyof
these heroic days. There will be no
young men In that group of Texas vet-
erans that will gather at Dallas next
week. The seal of Time will bo set on
every brow and the silver threads will
be many on the heads of those upon
whom all Texas will that day pray a fer-
vent benediction.
Free transportation will only be ac-
corded those who have new certificates
of membership. That all may under-
stand Just who are entitled to the honors
of membership In this distinguished cir-
cle we give the four classes that are re-
cognized as forming the association of
Texas veterans :
"1. All survivors or Austin'! 'ol.l tliroo-

4. Tho willows ot till ucccasctl meinlHT. mul

This will be the most distinctively pa-
triotic and hlstorlo anniversary that this
young State has yet been called upon to
celebrate. All "veterans" who can
should be at Dallas that day to share In
the glory as they hate previously shared
In the perils of this great Commonwealth.
All honor to the Texas veterans. May
the memory of San Jaolnto day be per-
petuated to generations yet unoorn and
Its anniversary be fittingly celebrated.
CinLVi.i: had a prophetlo view of Jay
Gould wbe he wrote of 'one man
power." The lash of the "great cylo's"
Invective would sing sharply around
such a subject as the lllssourl Pacific
autocrat.
TnK cry of "disintegration of the
.British empire" Is raised by all the con-
servative opponents of Gladstone's
miasures for home rule. This cry Is
caught up aad echoed by nearly all the
continental Journals outside of France.
These latter viewing the situation frou
a Republican standpoint are quite gen-
eral In their hearty commendation of
tho measures proposed Germany
whloh never had any love for Gladstone
pronounces almost unanimously against
the scheme as utterly without those re-
strictions necessary to preserve the em-
pire from complete shipwreck. The
Liberal Vosslche Zellung stands alone
among a dozen prominent llerlln Jour-
nals as an advocate of the Premier'
policy. Itussla prays heartily for tho
success of the Ghulitontan scheme not
because of any love fer Ireland but be-
cauio she deems the carrying out of the
proposed measures certain to weaken
the llrltlsh empire. The one Idea of the
great Northern Hear long has been any-
thing to weaken the llrltlsh I.lon. The
Oar may reckon without his host here.
The graatlng of Just measures of relief
from oppression and the Introduction
of needed reforms will not lessen the
cohesion of tho empire. Kngland's dis-
sensions arc among her own' statesmen
on questions of Internal policy; when It
comes to meeting a foreign foe the old
lion will still bo found n long-clawed
strong-Jawed tough-bided king of the
Jungle.
Dji.ms nnd (lalveston are running a
neck and neck rneo for that convention.
It Is a stnnd-oll' between the bake-oven
and mosquito marsh.
Tiik "son of his father" does not al-
wajs havo tho best views of public life
even If the old man did get there.
I.OIUI Ciiuiiciiim. llnds himself In a very
peculiar position ns tho opponent to-
day of the home rule measures he was
so anxious to Introduce In person six
months since. It Is a clear case of sour
grapes with Mm Homo rule for Ire-
laud Is assured If not now later; If not
by Gladstone by some statesman who
will come aflcr him. Ills hand has both
killed and made alive. It has killed
cverolon and made some scheme of homo
rule n necessity. With these tho Great
Liberal l'rcmler may be content to go
down to history even should lie fill of
the full accomplishment of his broad
treasures of reform.
TiiKTImpson Times thinks that lion
would improve his dunces by hiring
the Waco Kxamlncr's mouth shut; the
Kxamlner thinks otherwise. Walt nnd
co what the convention thinks
Tiik assurance grows stronger dally
that the "boomed" candidates will be
doomed candidates.
Dii. l'ai'i. 1'Aqtnx veterinary surgeon
of Missouri Is now In 1'arls studying the
character of the contagious diseases that
nflcnt nnlmals upon the continent. In a
letter to tho Itural World he expressed n
strong disbelief In any remedial measures
In seated cases of pleuro-pneiimonla. I Iv
nij s that preventive measures alone are
available and all ellbrts should be di-
rected to till n a cure Is Impossible.
Ills remedies lire Inoculation and nil Im-
mediate slaughter of the diseased cattle.
Atsii.N and Waco nre waking the
echoes with their trumpets for hwnln
nnd lioss but neither card Is a winning
one nnd the convention won't trump it.
Tiik Kngle l'ass Journal poses as
l'atlence on n monument waiting for n
"town clock smelting works opera-
house hospital bended warehouse free
library public building graded drained
and paved streets plaza pavilion Irri-
gation and a high school." lllcssed are
the meek who expect to Inherit the
earth; blessed also are they who expect
nothing Tor verily they shall not be dis-
appointed. Tiik ngony Is over. The olllclnl count
nt Houston is ended. Dan C. Smith has
u plurality of four votes. Mayor linker
declared that gentleman duly elected
and s the contest ends. .Major linker
has shown good senso In not prolonging
the strife by contesting tho result.
Tiik Journals that cry out loudest
against tho boycott nre the first to
threaten those Journals that sympathize
with the strikers with being put "upon
the list." Consistency Is a Jewel but it
has no untl-boycolt setting.
Tnitiwnln nnd the ltoss organs
(mouth organs) seem to expect that the
people of Texas like the unjust Judge
of the Scriptures will yield to their op-
portunities rather limn grow wearied
with their continued Jargon. The peo-
pie are tired terribly tired but not
nearly as tired as they would be should
they be so unfortunate as to elect either
of the "boomed" candidates.
Saiiink l'ass Is hoeing her own row In
the matter of appropriations and gets
there In good shapo too. She will enter
the list with a Congressman pledged to
Sabine I'ais Improvements.
San Aniomu has no special dlfllculty
In keeping moist this season. Her
people nre sometimes charged with be-
ing thirsty but they do not complain of
being dry this season.
TiiHin: Is no let up to the cries of the
ltoss and Hwnln henchmen nor Is there
likely to be until the convention snows
both of these candidates under. If one-
half of what either side says about the
candidate of the other is true the nomi
nation of either would be n disgrace to
the State.
TiiKboys In a Green Point (I. I.) pub-
Ho school struck yesterday ror a longer
recess and refused to enter the school-
room. The mother of the ringleader also
struck- where It would do most good.
The ringleader was struck out and school
resumed.
Tiik Galveston News and the Tribune
of the same city are called to account
for attempting to select a congressman
In the Uouiton district In the Interest
of the Galveston Wharf Company. No
use making a row. It Is manifest ties
tiny Just now for the Island City to lay
hands on all within reach. The city
owns tho State and the News owns the
city. The only puzzle Is where the Tri-
bune comes In. This last conundrum
bothers Houston.
Tiik call arises from several sections of
this State for Judge A. W. Terrell
and his blue cotton umbrella to
mount his mule and commence his
Senatorial canvass. That mule carries
more brains than the whole crew of Ter-
rell's competitors for the Senate can
muster. Whatever may be the result In
the State Legislature the opinion of the
people as to who has the brains Is pretty
clearly expressed. Had Judge Terrell
been blessed wllh as much polllo fore-
sight as brains he would not have fa-
tally handicapped himself with that
3000(100 acre Job. Terrell won't go to
Washington but the man who goes from
this State to the I'otomao Data will not
carry more brains under his hat than
Judge A. W. Terrell.
