Tlie .Morrison bill will soon come up
without the slightest prospect of becom-
ing law but will doubtless occupy the
attention or Congress for some w eeks be-
fore It Is finally squelched. As reported
it alms n direct blow at some or the lead-
ing Industries or this country and has
already antagonized so many seotlons
that Its fate may be considered sealed.
Its attempt to place salt on the

nize every salt Interest or the
United Stales and array In deadly hos-
tility to Its passage .New York Michi-

sibly l'enntylvanla. The dead set made
against the wool-growers or the country
has already caused no little commotion
In the Mock-master's districts and peti-
tions from Ohio are pouring In against
any change In the wool tarlfl. Nearly
all the -Middle and Western States Join
Ohio In this protest and the wool-growing
interests will pool all their Issues to
defeat a measure which Is only Intro-
duced to gain sectional votes from a few
free-traders ut the Kast. While salt and
wool are thus antagonized the lumber
InUrests or North nnd South are not left
lumiolested; the rice and sugar plant-
ers are also menaced and the
jute-growers threatened with ex-
tinction. It has been very In-
apy called a "huckstering bill" drawn
up for the purpose or gaining votes. It
"could hardly have been better adapted
to secure Its own defeat than as now
formulated. It will get such a ragging

clared entitled to the. test.
Tim morning dispatches contain a
strong appeal to Jay Gould from Gen-
eral Master Workman Fowderly of the
Knights or Labor for the submitting or
tbe whole matter of the strike In causes
and consequences to competent arbi-
tration. It a strong document a
mighty strong one and enters the very
citadel of Mr. Gould's entrenchments
and challenges their defences. The let-
ter Is broadly comprehensive exhaus-
tively deep going down to tbe very bed-
rock of tbe whole matter and puts the
burden of proof upon the Missouri Tad'
flc to show cause why It should not be
adjudged guilty of prolonging this
strike after the Executive Hoard had
made etery concession and done all In
Its power tp bring the matter to an
amicable settlement. Mr. 1'owilerly de-
nies In set terms several of Mr. Gould's
allegations concerning their New York
conference and his straight-forward
manly statements are such as will com-
mend their writer to the confidence of
labor and legitimate capital as never
before.
Tim old lady of Soledad street has an-
other of her periods of agony; this time
because the Liciiit won't go tilling at
some wind-mill. The Lioiit Isn't lilt-
ing at wind-mills as much as It was nnd
that's what's the matter with Hannah.
.Miiiiiiio. Is anxious tohavs salt placed
on the free list that his party may have
free passage aid no tolls up the saline
stream when tho Inevitable comes.
Tin: Express In criticising Hlshop
ilowman ot St. Louis for his utterances
on thelght-hour law and the Missouri
Tactile strike suggests that It Is Ike
parson's duty;to "preach forglvenessjnnd
mild-eyed charity." True but we have
a faint recollection or reading that on
one occasion the Illshop's master said
that he did "not come to send peace on
earth but a tword ;" also that he gave a
very sovcre cursing to those who "de-
voured widows' bouses" who placed
"burdens on men'H backs Intolerable to
be borne" nnd would not "themselves
touch them with one or their little
lingers." Tho good llhhop may have
righteous rause lor anger In which case
he may be merely obeying I'muI's In
junction "He ye angry and sin nut"
Mm. (Ioiii.ii says I'owderly Is over-
ruled by his committee. Judging from
the morning reports Jay Gould Is un-
derscored by the man whom he s&js Is
overruled (jueer world this; most any-
thing happens and no one knows
"what's gwlne to drap next."
Tub political speculators are already
canvnsslng the party-complexion of the
next Congress. Metier wait until the
people get through collerdamlng this
one.
TitK.Natlonal Democracy have raised
their voices and wept; wept because
they have no policy no colieslveness no
consistency no unity know nothing.
Tho Democratic leaders are late In find-
ing out what the country discovered
months ago. Better late than never
however nnd now a caw-cuss Is called
for to settle all differences pool their ad-
verse opinions nnd evolve out of their
Individual chaos a creative whole. The
more sagacious ones see the handwriting
on the lsss wall and their knees have
begun the old Helshazar movement.
Nothing like getting used to It In time
gentlemen.
(Jkneiui. Koiikiit.h expresses the opln-
n that the Judge and Sheriff of Webb
County could have prevented the
Laredo riot If they had exerted them
selves.
Oik anxious friends In the north of
Texas are positively assured that there
are no 1232 strikers parading this city
with bludgeons In their bands and blood
In their eyes. A few dozen hungry fel-
lows wanted something better than a
dollar a day wages said so and did not
get It. Simply that and nothing more.
There were scores of men hungrier than
they were standlag by who preferred
the dollar to starvation and the wheels
of this mighty municipality moved on
all the same. What n fuss for such a
paltry matter as that of Justice to a rew
hard-listed laborers and decency nnd
comfort for their families. The thing
Is monotonous; it grows a nuisance; It
should be abated.
Tim Chicago clergy Indorse Sam Jones'

There are thousands who bank on Sam
Jones' humor who don't care a conti-
