A GENUINE MERMAID
Exhibited Privately Deforo Oeneral Fran-
cisco Narnnjo and Friends This
Morning In the Parlors or
the Southern
Senor Mariano Agulcrre of the city
of Mexico la In the oily and Is stopping
at the Southern hotel. Ho has been
traveling over the country sight-seeing
In companv with bis son who Is a mem-
ber or the Mexican Typical orchestra.
While In Denver Mr. Auglerre se-
cured the loan from a friend of a moat
wonderful and hitherto fabled curiosity
being no more nor lew than
Ihe mummy of a mermaid perfect In
form and feature and presenting In real-
ity all the fabled attrlhutea of that cur-
ious "luiui naturae." It Is three feet
long with a perfect akeleton bead from
theakull of which la a long growth of
fine hair and with the buat of a welt de
veloped woman and the tallofaflih.
the lower part of the body having amall
fliby scales covering It. It has every
appearance or a human being down to
to the waist. There are 14 ribs a per-
fect collar bone and the usual comple-
ment of glands. The teeth resemble
those of a Mali. Tho note and forehead
are human-like In their expression and
the chin Is rounded off perfectly.
There are two muicularly formed
arms having perfect elbow Joints and
wrlit Joints and four talon-like lingers
and a thumb on each. The tendons lo
the hands are distinctly visible. The
nails on the lingers are long and claw-
like. From the waist down It resembles
a rook cod with a lln on the back at the
end of the spine and a double lln on the
tall. The anatoinleal characteristics
would teem to show that It had n large
degree of brain development and the
eyes mouth tongue and stomach are
endowed with signs of a high rank Intbe
creative scale. Senor Agnlerre la on hla
way with It for exhibition In Mexico
City and panlng through this city
learned that General Naranjo and fam-
ily were aolournlng here and exhibited
the curiosity to himself family and
many friends this morning at the par-
lors of the Southern hotel. A gieat
many gentlemen examined the mer-
maid closely but could discover no de-
ception. Senor Agulerre gave to a
Light reporter this morning to sub-
stantiate his claims as to to Its authen-
ticity sworn tertlllcates from David K.
Crawford a government official who
has traveled over the old world and vis-
ited the Persian gulf (where this speci-
men waa found) and who states that It
Is genuine and that he has seen these
strange creatures In- their native ele-
ment and that while rare their exist-
ence Is well established tn the East. He
also has certificates from Ihe vice-consul
of Mexico in Kansas City and from
museum owners and collectors of Chic-
ago and Clnolnnatl where the curiosity
was exhibited privately. Senor Ag-
ulerre says this mermaid was round In
the waters or Illyrla on the shores or
the Persian gulf two and one-half years
"go by two native fishermen. It was
captured alive but soon died after cap-
ture. It has but recently been brought
to this country.

Clothing for the Million.
The chief attraction at present Is the
mammoth display of gentlemen's cloth-
ing at Mr. L. Wolfson's White Elephant
clothing emporium on Main plaza. It Is
not saying too much that every gentle-
man In the state could be furnished with
a suit of clothea and then there would be
filenty left for cow boya; and theae are
astldloui too. The fact is Wolfson
keeps himself supplied from first-class
manufactories only and hence can supply
the demand ror a superior article for less
money than It csn be procured anywhere
else. Thin and light fabrics in oolors
and black are at present exhibited and
owing to the heated term have a big
run; seersuoker alpaca.llgbt merino and
a large number of tine materials can be
had In suits or separate pieces. Dress
and wedding suits In the various grades
of fine quality In texture end make up
to the finest "doeskin" and Imported
broadcloth are among the specialties In
the Immense stock now displayed. There
Is no excuse ror anyone to go ragged or
badly dressed while Wolfion holds out
Inducements In low figures ror dress
floods and ready-made suits by the car
oad and enough to clothe every gentle-
man in the state. 7-12-tf
