THE CONVENTION CLOSES.
Tho Democracy of Toxaa Do Through tho
Motions and Adjourn Other
Telegraph Ticks.
Convention assembled yesterday
morning and proceeded with the ballot-
Ins; for lieutenant-governor. Johnson
withdrew his name and Wheeler was
nominated by acclamation.
In tbe ballut for attorney-general the
same soenes were repeated as In the bal-
lot for governor James II. Hogg of
Tyler was forging rapidly ahead of alt
competitors when his opponents with-
drew and left hlui a clear Held.
In the nomination for Justice of tbe
supreme court half a score of names
were put In nomination but during the
progress of the first ballot the oootest
narrowed down to- Itrrrls of Helton anil
Oalnea of Lamar and the vote stood SCO
for Ualnes ; 310 for Harris. Harris mag-
nanimously withdrew In favor of Oalnea.
and who. waa declared tho nominee of
the convention.
MeCall waa nominated lor comptroller
on the third ballot ; Hall or Williamson
waa nominated land commissioner on
the first ballot; Lubbock waa nominated
stale treasurer by acclamation: O. II
Cooper of Harris county was nomi-
nated State superintendent of schools on
tbe second ballot and tbe olllces wera
fllled.satlsractorlly at least to the success-
ful aondldates.
Several resolutions were passed; the

Mexico proposes as a preliminary to
tho settlement of tbe Cutting case that
Uncle Sam appoint an envoy extraor-
dinary to go over the case with the
Mexican attorney-general And out tbe
true Inwardness ot tbe affair and report
to Washington. Tending the agreement
neither party to take action. The cabi-
net acceded to the request after two
hour's consultation.
John Ireland aays Cutting never made
application to him but expresses In a
recent dispatch to tbe New York World
the hope that the government of the
United States can never be made to sub-
mit to such a rule of law. Every editor
and every other pofson who writes or
prints matter In the United States ob-
noxious to tho vlows of Mexico can at
any time when found In Mexico be ar-
rested and punished as Cutting has been.
The person of Cutting Is not alone In-
volved. Surely our government has not
made an Idle demand. No one wants
war but I trust no one wants peace at
tbe expense of national honor and the
rights of American citizens. The only
way to avoid war Is to be ready for It.
Show a willingness to accept It If It must
come. Outrage has gone far enough.
Congressman Lanham rises to explain
how It was that tbe resolution on the
Cutting case was not acted upon by con-
gress. Congress bad agreed to adjourn
that day and did not see the matter of
sufficient Importance to delay on that
account. In other words It waa more
Imrcrtr.nt that congressmen should go
home and look after political fences than
that the honor of the American name
should be upheld and the rights or
American citizens vindicated.
The democraoy of the third Georgia

THE REWARD OP OENIUB.
Many or tho readers or the LinnT have
read and admired that beautiful poem
Curfew must not rlne to-nlnht" and
some few have made the acquaintances
of Its esteemed authoress Mrs. Hosa
Hartwlck Thorpe whilst ahe resided In
tbe Alamoclty. To all ol these it will
be Interesting to learn how when and
under what olroumstanues tbe gem or
poesy was written.
In I8J7 ltosa Hartwlok was a seventeen-year-old
school girl residing with
her parents at I.llohllcld. Michigan.
She read at that time a historic story
entitled "Love and. Loyalty" and Its
romantla lncldenterere tlrmly Im-
pressed upon her mind. She bad never
made any attempt at poetry and now
tried merely aa a literary extreme
never dreaming that she had tbe ability
to write anything that would be worthy
of publication or that would attract
attention. In her attempt she had to
overcome one great obstacle that was
her father's objection. He watched over
ber education and be had no apprecia-
tion or poetry. Taking ber arithmetic
In one band and a slate. In the other she
sat quietly In the corner and while her
prosaic father supposed she was study-
ing mathematics she wrote tbe first
draft of her poem upon her elate. This
sbe altered and amended until ahe
brought It to lta present f.'rm and then
admiring the poem sbe surreptlously
copied It upon writing paper. Half In
Jest and half in pride she sent the poem
to the editor ot the Commercial Adver-
tiser of Detroit giving her name In con-
fidence but requesting It should be pub-
lished anonymously. That gentleman
bad the good sense to see the beauties.
Ho published tbe poem and wrote tbe
young authoress a complimentary letter
of praise and encouragement. The poem
was copied In the papera from
one end of the union to the other
and waa the theme or general praise.
Even her father read It In his paper
a'oud In the family circle praising It
without knowing that It emanated from
hta daugbter'a brain lta popularity In-
creased aa It was known and like
"Beautiful Snow" lta autborshlp was
for a long time a mystery. Some
merlin luus writers tried to claim It
whilst the newspapers endeavored to fix
Its authorship on certain poets. Mrs.
Thorpe's claim to the poem has long
been admitted by the literary world.
Such Is tbe popularity of Curfew must
not ring to-night" that It Is Inoludetl In
all good literary selections and It has
been translated Into many tongues yet
strange to aay Mrs Thorpe never real-
ized a cent by tbe poem. Glory baa been
her onlr reward.
Mrs. Thorpe baa atnee written many
poems and while these show a full
senie.of poesy none of them equal in in-
terest or beauty ber first effort. What-
ever claim she has forpostbumus fame
will undoubtedly rest mainly upon that
work.
Mrs. Tborpe la now In the 30th year of
her age. She la a quiet amiable unos-
tentatious woman wbols happily mated
to Mr. Edmund C. Tborpe and esteemed
by her many friends. She came to
Texas to renovate her Impaired health
and naturally sought the shrine ot Texan
liberty the Alamo Cltv. and it la Dleaa-
Ing to learn that ber Journey has cot
been in vain. Wherever ahe goes she
wins many friends and tbe mere faot
that sbe Is tbe authoress ol "Curfew
must not ring to-night" la" alwaya audi
clent to secure her a hearty welcome
Suob la the reward of genius.
