"If ynit marry tho rlglit woman

of the happiest and most successful
men In tho world but if you should

most miserable."
I (e always looked nt mo w I th laughing
eyes.
"I shall make no mistake John. I
know that somewhere or other tho
most adorable woman In tho world is
waitliift for mo. I shall Ihj sure to find
her and fall in love with her marry
her and live lianpy forever afterwards."
"lint you will bo careful Iance" I
said.
"As careful as a man cun be; but
John as you are so anxious you had
better chooso for me."
"No" I replied. "I made so irreat n
mistake when I had to chooso fur my-
self that I shallnovcrnttcmplltagalii"
Circumstances happened that drew
me over to Ainericn. I hail a larire in-
terest in some laud there and not carlnr;
about tho trouble nt It I went over to

great prolit. and as 1 liked America I
remained there three years. I sailed
for America In tho month of Octoticr

Ilo wrote whole volumes to mo before
bis marriage and lie wroto volumes af-
terwards. Of course she was perfec-
tion nay just a llttlo beyond perfec-
tion I think; sue was lienutiful clever
accomplished nnd such a darling of
course I might bo sure of that. One.
thing only was wanted tn mako Mm
perfectly happy It was that I should
see bis lady love. Her name was Fran-
ces Wynn and ho assured me that it
was the most poetical name in the
world. 1'atro after Dane of rhansodv
did lie write and I read until nt last I
believed him that ho Had round tho one
perfect woman in the-world.

and while there It was Impossible to re-
sist the temptation of running on to
Hrlghton. I loved the place so well and
I had not seen It lor ho lung. I wauled
to stand onco mule on tht Chain I'ler
and think of my lost Heaven. How
Vividly it all came back to me tout ter
rible tragedy although moro than three
years had passed slnco It happened.
Tliero was lie corner whero I had sat
In the thick soft shadows; tliero was
the railing against which she leaned
when she threw tho little bundle. In tho
water.
I remembered tho fitful light the
wash of tho waves around the pier tho
beautiful desperate face and tho volco
that had walled: "If I dare; oh my
(iod if I darel"
I went to seo tho llttlo grave. The
thick green grass which covered it was
studded Willi white daisies; the golden
letters ou tlio white cross seemed to
burn In tho sunlight: "Marnh found
drowned." I had been to the other end
of the world but no one had been to
lied one tear over tho little grave. .
crurTKit v.
It is good to see the faco of nn old
friend after a long absence. Tears tilled
my eyes when the sunny bluo ones
looked into them nnd the handsome
faco quivering with emotion smiled
Into mine. 1 was glad to feel onco
moro the clasp of that honest hand.
"Ah Lance" I cried "I would travel
twice as fur for one hour with youl"
I shall never forget that pretty sta-
tion at Vale ltoyal. A beautiful brawl-
ing river ran close by spanned by nn
old-fashioned rustlo bridge; three hugo
chestnut trees now in full flower seem-
ed to shado the wholo place.
"A pretty Bpot" said proud happy
Lance; "but wait until you see Dutton!
I tell Frances that I am qulta sure It is
the original garden of puradisel"
"Let us pray that no serpent may en-
ter therein!" I said.
"There Is no fear John" he replied
"my Frances would be an antldoto
against all the serpents In tho world.
We shall have n glorious drive home.
How do you like my carriage?"
It was perfect so were tlio horses so
was the groom In his neat llvory so was
the dog-cart waiting for the luggage so
was the magnillcent retriever that ran
with the carriage. What a drive it was!
Of nil seasons In all climes give me an
.English spring. The hedges woro cov-
ered with white and pink hawthorn;
the apple trees were all In bloom; the
air was redolent of marlets. The white
lambs were In the meadows; the leaves
were springing on tho trees; tho birds
singing.
"It is like it new llfo John" said the
happy young fellow by my side; then
quite unable to keep his thoughts or his
words long away from hor ho contin-
ued: "Frances will be so pleased to seo
you we have talked of nothing else for
"I am afraid that she will be disap-
pointed when she sees me Lance."
"Nn. Indnad." be roulled. heartU"
"You look better than you mil wnen
yon went to Ainericn John jou look
younger less haggard less worn IVr- I
haps you have found some comfort?"
"Not of the kind you menu. Lanco"
I answered "nnrt I nover shall."
"Ah" he said musingly "what mis-
chief ono Imd woman can makot And
tho waa a bud woman this false lovo of
yours John"
"If she had been n good ono she
would have lieen true." I replied.
"I think" said lJtnce musingly
"that In all this world thcio is nothing
so horrible ns n bad a really bad or
wicked woman! They seem to ine much
worse than men just ns a good woman
Is better than n man could ever bo is
little less than nu nngel
"Do you know" ho continued his
volco trembling with emotion "I did
not understand how good a womiui
could bet -My wife. Frances is quite
an angel. Vt hen 1 sec her in the morn-
ing her fair face so fresh and pure
kneeling down to say her prayers I feel
quite unworthy uf her; when I see the
rapt earnest expression of her face ns
we sit sldo by sido In church I long to
bo like her. She is ono of tho gentlest
and sweetest of human beings; there is
no ono llko her!"
"I am heartily glad that you nro so
happy my deaiestl.anco" I said.
lie continued. "I know that my talk-
ing does not bore Jou; you nro too truo
n friend: It eases my heait for It is al-
ways full of her. You do not know
how good she isl Why John the soul
of a good woman Is clear nnd transpar-
ent like a deep clear lake; and in it
ono sees such beautiful things. When
my Frances speaks to a llttlo child there
comes Into her voiro a beautiful tender-
ness a ring uf such clear sweet music
that I say to myself It Is more like the
volco of an nngel than of a woman; It
Is Just tho same when she sjienks tn
nnyono In sorrow or sickness. Tho
strange thing to mo Is tills that though
she is so good herself so pure and inno-
cent she has such profound compas-
sion fur the fallen nnd the miserable.
At Vale ltoyal only a few months ago
tliero was ono of those tinfortiinato
cases. A servant girl a very pretty
and nlco girl too she was was turned
out of her mistress's hoiiso In tho cold
of n winter's night; her boxes nnd
wages were put Into tho street and sho
was told to go to tlio workhouse. She
almost went mad with shame and de-
spair. Frances would go to the rescue
and I honestly believe that through my
wlfo's charity and goodness that unhap-
py girl will be restored to her placo in
tho world or that nt least she will not
go ns sho otherwise would have done
to the bad. I thought that a must beau-
tiful trait In her character."
"So it wns" I replied liking my dear
old friend nil the better for his great
lovo for ills wife.
"Sho Is always tho same" ho con-
tinued "full uf charily nnd tenderness
fur tho poor. Vou could nut think how
much they love her. All round Vnlo
ltoyal she is worshipped. I am a very
fortunate man John.''
" Vou nro Indeed" I replied.
Ho went on
"I nlwavs had niv ideal. I have
known many. Nono ever reached my
standard but Frances nnd she Is my
Ideal come to life the reality found
fair sweet and true a blniulo queenly
woman. I should think that very few
men meet and marry their Ideal as I
have met and married mine Ah there
Is tho nvcmio that leads to the old
manor-house! Who could have thought
mat l snoiiiu ever no master oi a manor-house
John? Neither that nor tho
handsome lncomo belonging to it would
bo of any use without Frances. It Is
Frances who makes the world to me."
Tho nvenuo was a superb ono. It con-
sisted of tall chestnut trees standing
four deep. I have seen nothing liner.
Just now the lloweia were all in bloom
tho bees mid buttctllles had all been
drawn there by their odor: the birds
were Hitting in and out making grand
discoveries lu thu great boughs; tlio
ground was n carpet of Ilowcis whlto
aisles and gulden buttercups mixed
with wild hyacinths nnd graceful blue-
bells. We drove for some few minutes
over this carpet and then the old grey
manor-bouse stood beforo us the pret-
tlent picture ever seen on n Summer's
day. Tho whole front uf the house was
covered with llowvni and tlio Ivy grew
green and thick it ellinlx'd to tho very
top of the towers.
"Famous ivy." said I-'iucn. "l'eoplo
come to Dutton to look at tint ivy."
"I do not wonder nt it" I said.
I was somewhat surprised at tbo style
of the house. I had not expected any-
thing so grand so beautiful.
"Wo shall havo tlinii fur n cigar and
a stroll beforo dinner" said Lance as
he throw the reins to tho groom; "but
you must see Frances first John you
must see her."
Hut ono uf the servants told us that
Mrs. Fleming was In the drawing-room
engaged with Lady Ijjdblttcr. Lanco's
faco fell.
"You do not seem to care for Lady
Ledbltter." I said to him.
"In truth 1 do not; she is a county
magnate and n local horror I call her
Sho leads all tho ladles of tho county;
they are frightened to death at her;
they frown when sho frowns smllo
w hen she smiles. I begged of Frances
not to fall under her sway but I have
lagged In vnlu no doubt. If she has
been there fur half an hour Frances will
havo given In."
Ho turned nn me suddenly so sud-
denly Indeed that ho almost startled
mo.
"Do you know" ho said "those kind
of women fair and calm whose
thoughts seem to bo always turned in-
wards? My wife is ono of those; when
ouu talks to her sho listens with her
eyes down and seems as though site
had left another world uf thought Just
for your sake. Her manner always
piques one to go ou talking lor the sake
of making her smile. I can Just Imag-
ine how she looks now while Lady Led-
bltter talks to her. Well come to your
own room John mid wu will stroll
round the giounds till her ladyship has
retreated."
What it beautiful old house it was
one could tell so easily that a lady oi
tnstoand refinement presided over it.
Tlio fine old oak was not covered but
contrasting with 11 were thick crimson
rugs hangings of crimson velvet and it
was relieved by any amount of flowers;
beautiful pictures were hung with ex-
quisite taste whlto statues stood out In
grand relief against the dark walls.
"Your wlfo is a woman of taste that
Is quite evident Lance" I said.
My own room. it spacious chamlier
called tho lllue Chamber a largo old-
fashioned room with thrco windows
each window beat as largo ns a small
room; tho hangings were of blue and
white; there weie afew janlinlers with
costly odorous flowers: easy chairs a
comfuitablo couch. Llttlo stands had
been placed with easy chairs In the win-
dow seats; the room looked ns though
bluebells had been strewn with illiberal
hand un whlto ground.
"How beiiutirnll" I cried; "I shnll
never want to leave this room again
Lance."
"I wish you would stay hero and nev-
er leave us: I tun liantiv enough in hav
ing Frances (f 1 had you as well my
happiness would bo complete. You
havo all you want John; I will send
yoiirpoitmauteau."
When Lance inul gone I looked round
my room and fell in hive with it. It
had tlio charm of old fashion of ele-
gance of space of height ami from
the windows tliero was a magnillcent
view of tho park and the gardens.
"Lanco must Indeed bo a happy man"
I thought to myself.
llecamoto me when I was dressed
and we went out fur a stroll through tlio
gardens.
"We shall hear the dinner bell." u'.i
Lance "lie will not go too far."
Wo saw thu stately equipage of Lady
Ledbltter driven duwii (he avenue.
"Tlinnk Heavenl" said l.mcc. "Now
Frances Is frit-. She will have gnno to
her room. That good Ijtdy Iilblttcr
has rubbed us of a pleasant hour.''
I was surprised and delighted at the
magnHlcenco of the ground. I had
never drenmed Hint Dutton manor-
house was so extensive or so lienutiful.
"Tho great artist. Llllas is coming
hero next week" said Lanco. "I want
him to paint my wife's portrait. She
will make n superb picture and when
completed that picture shall have the
place of honor hero In the drawing-
room. You will enjoy meeting him; ho
Is a most intelligent amiable man"
That good Ijuico; It seemed to mo
qulto lmKs!hln that ho could speak
even these words without bringing In
Frances; but how bright nnd happy he
looked; I envied him.
"Do ns I have done. John" ho said.
".Marry llellevn me no man knows
what happiness means until ho does
marry."
"tm must And mo a wlfo Just llko
your ow n" I said and tho words enmo
back to mo afterwards with a fervent
prater of "Heaven fotbldl may Heav-
en forbldl"
"I shnll never marry now Lance" I
said "Tho only woman I could ever
lovo Is dead to me.".
He louked nt mo very earnestly.
' I wish you would forget all about
her. John. Shu was not worthy of you."
"1'erhnps not" I replied "but that
does not interfere with tho lovo."
'Why should you give all Hint loving
heart of jours to ono woman John?"
he said "If ono falls try another."
"If your Frances died should you
lovo another woman?" I asked.
"That Is quite another thing" ho
said nml I saw that in his heart ho re-
sented tho fact that 1 should plaee tho
woman who had been faithless to mo
on nn equality with his wife. Foor

As wo drew near the houso on our re-
turn tho llrxl diliurr-hell was ringing.

flowers of every hue were now in bins-

faced the west nnd tho tun was setting.
For a few moments my eyes wero daz-

I saw a tall figure at tho other end of
the room a beautiful llguro dressed In
nlongroboof blue with a crown of
golden brown hair; when sho turned

charitable lady who was so good to tho
fallen and the miserable In this wom-
an idolized by thu man I luvcd best on
earth I saw the mnmVmn the woman
who had dropped the lltllo buiidlo over
the railing into the sea.
It was she as surely its Heaven shonn
above us. I recognized Hie beautiful
face tho light golden hair tho tall
graceful llguro. Tlio faco was not
whlto set and desperate now but
bright with a snft. sweet radiance I
havo seen un tho faco of noxither wom-

heart was paralyed with horror. I
felt my blood grow cold and gather
round my heait leaving my fnco whlto

to meet mo with tlio B.11110 graceful uu-
dulatlng grace which had struck mo be-

Chain Pier with the wild wasto of
waters around me and tho rapid rush
of tlio waves lu my ear. Thou a lienu-
