Eagles Face
Southerners
ye.ar ago that the Southerners in-
vaded Denton with a 7-3 upset
over powerful Alabama as a call-
ing card, and the Eagles promptly
dumped Coach Thad Vann's team
15-7.
It will be the Southerners’
Homecoming contest, too, which
should give the Eagles a doubly
tough assignment.
In pre-season rankings the Hat-
tiesburg team was rated as a bet-
ter ball club than the 1954 unit
which finished with a 8-4 mark.
And they have 31 returning let-
termen to justify that prediction.
Missing from the Southerners*
backfield will be their star signal
caller of 1954, Jim Davenport, who
deserted football for a crack at
professional baseball. Starting in
his position will be either George
Herring. Doug Barfield, or Bobby
Hughes, a former North Texas
player.
Hughes was a two-year letter-
man-for the Eagles before trans-
ferring to Mississippi Southern
in the fall of 1954. He has been
sidelined most of this year with
injuries, however, and may see
only limited action against his
former teammates.

HUNTSVILLE (--Tough Texas
convicts mat their match yesterday
aa they tangled with tougher bulls
and broncs at the opening of the
annual Texas Prison Rodeo.
An estimated crowd . of 30,000
watched the prison stock keep an
edge over inmate riders during the
two-hour show. Some performers
were old-timers, many were new
faces.
Gail Hall, serving 25 years trom
Odessa, won the famous . prison
rodeo mad scramble—featuring 10
Bramha bulls with 10 riders com-
ing out of the chiitn at one time.
Second was Charles Brogden, (he

Only two riders placed in the
saddle bronc riding event. Veteran
prison rodeo rider Herman Sigier,
a lifer from Dallas,' won over Boo-
by Smithers of Denton, with a 10
year term. (. .
The prison rodeo is an annual
affair held each Sunday in October.
BUCKEYES COULD DROP
The Buckeyes, however, could
well drop several notches because
of their defeat by the unheralded
Indians. The game still was the
talk of the gridiron world today
as most of the nation’s major
teams prepared to settle down io
races in their respective confer-
ences.
Stanford held All America Hop-
along Cassady to 37 yards rushing
and made a touchdown at the end
of a 72-yard drive the first Line

Notre Dame blanked Indiana 19-0

over Arkansas' defending Razor-
backs.

This is Mitchell's 10th year as
head coach of the Eagles. His rec-
ord stood at 50 wins, 34 losses
and three ties as the '55 season
got underway.
Among the Eagle veterans are
last year's starting quarterback,
Don Baker, and five letterman
halfbacks, Tommy Runnels John
Snead, Jack Wages, Don Smith
and Ben Boehnke. This group helps
offset the loss of last year s lead-
ing ground-gainer, Dean Renfro,
now in the pro ranks.
There are veterans at every line
position except tackle, and Coach ’
strong chance of staying that way,
but they were not the chief concern
of the other league members for
the' moment.
Intersectional troubles plagued
the conference-memories ofelack
Saturday when not a school won
against outside opposition, and
thoughts of what's coming up his
week.
Dallas will have a double-header
due to drag in about 125,000 tans.

afternoon Texas clashes with some-
body it isn’t likely to beat—Okla-

record thus far/is seven victories,
