A whole lot to say
’69, 1969
Ya...a lot to say.
Has it always been set to music?
The music is just to add to ...
to complement.
V
Quite extensive...a lot of traveling.
A compilation of the other two?
Right.
Besides Check It, you have this 45.
You’ve been over there before?
How are sales going?
No...
Knowing people...

It was about '69, ’70.
Wendell Buggs
I go to Dallas, Colorado, and then
New Mexico.
Ya, well I have out another 12 inch
named Drug Kulcha.
Well, the Check It album has reached
Number I on the reggae charts here
in America.
No, it’s out of record company
Artiste.
Ya we been, first time we came it
was in Colorado, when here before.
Then we go Atlanta, Indiana, Ohio,
Chicago, California.
Drug Kulcha, the poem, does that
come from personal...
No ... the poetry is not written with
music, ya know, the poetry is written
and then the music.
How many books, you have this book I
see and ...
I would like to know when you started
writing your poetry.
Ya, I've been trying to get that. You
cannot get it in town.

A FEW WORDS WITH MUTABURUKA

■Y 1,
There's a reggae shop, record shop in
town, they keep importing it but it's
been selling out, quick as they can
get it in.
Yes, well the first one was more
wide, ya know. Last time at least 27
shows.
E
You've been to those areas, New
Mexico and Colorado?

Overall, the Houston Jazz Festival was
sensational. The rain didn't dampen the
music, but yes, it could have been a
bigger turnout. Just wait till next year.
Do you think you’ll be part of
Sunsplash, when it tours?
The next night, more great jazz. Even
though the sound was off. It seems that
the mixing board was behind the stage and
the sound man couldn’t hear, so the sound
suffered. Nevertheless, Conrad Johnson's
Big Band blew the roof off. Mayor Kathy
Whitmire, even made an appearance to
present Conrad Johnson the HJF "Jazz
Musician of the Year" Award.
OK and where do you go after
Houston.
Yes, well I have three books including
this one, ya know. But this one is
basically the two books in one, ya
know.
Next Year? This time? No. No, I
don't think so. We're supposed to go
play England. Tour in November.

The final night brought local and
national talent under one roof. Lenny
Steele Ensemble, Kirk Whalum Group and
Arnett Cobb and the Mob with Milt
Larkin. The sound was still off but
Arnett's Mob stole the show from the
main act, Woody Shaw. But what do you
expect from Houston's own.

A well ya see, ya know, its an
experience our own, ya know. An
awareness.
A lot of searching or was it just
something that...
Thursday night, Basirah and her
Company opened the festival. Her
creative piano and compositions set the
mood for the main act—McCoy Tyner.
Naturally, Bubbha Thomas and the
Lightmen and the Horace Grigsby Group
lit up the amphitheater. Then, McCoy
Tyner Quintet with reedman Gary Bartz,
took the stage and the show. The Tyner
technique is well developed, electrifying
and inspiring. Buy why not, this is the
matured older 17 year old who started
with John Coltrane.

The Houston Jazz Festival, organized
by SumArts, brought three nights of good
jazz music to Houston via Miller Theatre.
Even though it rained all three nights,
"the show must go on". And it was
definitely a great festival.
Ya, ya mon, definitely. Well, this
one is a follow-up to that one, Johnny
Drughead, a follow-up to a terrible
situation. A lot of youths get
involved with cocaine in Jamaica, it
start de trouble.
No, that's the only place I've never
played in Europe. We've been every-
where else. Been to Africa, been
to... (too much social noise).
Yes, I see that it's getting to be a big
thing here now. A lot of people into
it. What age, when was it when you I
realized the knowledge of Jah? ’
