DALLAS (AP) — A 16-year-old student shot a class-
mate in the neck and abdomen at a Texas high school
before firing at another student and missing, prosecutors
said Wednesday.
Details of the attack at Italy High School, south of Dal-
las, were recounted during a juvenile court hearing for the
boy accused in the attack.
He’s charged with two counts of aggravated assault
with a deadly weapon. Authorities haven’t released his
name because he’s a juvenile. He appeared in court in
Waxahachie wearing handcuffs and orange jail garb, ac-
companied by family members.
He repeatedly shot the 15-year-old girl in the school
cafeteria Monday morning before taking aim at the sec-
ond student as dozens of others looked on, prosecutors
said. The girl is hospitalized and is expected to survive.
“He only stopped because he ran out of bullets,” Ellis
County 1 st Assistant District Attorney Ann Montgomery
said after the hearing.
The teen was taken into custody outside the school
shortly after the shooting.
Authorities have not released a motive but prosecutors
said surveillance video appears to show the teen was an-
gry with the girl. He’s seen waving his arms and stomping
around her as she lay wounded on the cafeteria floor.

Members of Houston-area board
indicted for private meetings
PASADENA (AP) — A Harris County grand jury has
indicted six people who served on the economic devel-
opment board of a Texas city for violating the state’s
open-meetings law.
The Harris County district attorney’s office said in a
statement Tuesday that the six served on the board for
Pasadena, southeast of Houston.
Prosecutors say the panel met privately in small groups
in November 2016 to discuss remodeling Pasadena’s con-
vention center and rodeo arena.
The Texas Open Meetings Act requires that majority
gatherings of a government board be held publicly.
In a statement Wednesday, the board noted the indict-
ment relates to conduct by a previous board and that
changes have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
The board pledged to cooperate with authorities.
Separately, city leaders in October voted to pay $1.1
million to settle a lawsuit alleging a voting plan adopted
in 2013 diluted Latino power at the polls. And in March a
white fonner mayor apologized to a Hispanic councilman
for calling him “boy” during a meeting.
Frank G. Martinez, 69,
was bom on December
18, 1948 in Three Rivers,
Texas to Francisco ‘Pan-
cho’ and Vicenta Marti-
nez. He passed away on
January 22, 2018 sur-
rounded by his loving
family and friends.
Frank moved to
Baytown in 1975 were
he was employed for 35
years with Brown & Root/
Turner Industries and his
trade was pipefitting. He
was a dedicated and hard
worker but was forced to
leave in 2010 due to his
illness.
During his time off he
loved spending time with
his family, watching his
all-time favorite football
team, The Dallas Cow-
boys, barbecuing, making
bird houses or just spend-
ing his time outdoors.
He was a loving hus-
band, father, grandfather
known as “Papo”, brother,
uncle and a great friend.
He was respected and
adored by many and will
be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death
by his parents; his broth-
ers, Juan Gonzalez, Roy
Martinez, George Marti-

Martinez.

Houston homeowner dead in wall
apparently fell through attic
HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities say skeletal remains
found inside the wall of a Houston house are the former
homeowner who apparently fell through the attic floor
and became trapped.
A spokeswoman for the Harris County Institute of
Forensic Sciences said Wednesday there wasn’t enough
physical evidence to determine cause or manner of death
for Mary Cerruti. Tricia Bentley says it appears that Cer-
ruti, who was 61 at the time she disappeared, “accidental-
ly fell from her attic.”
Neighbors reported Cerruti missing in February 2015.
Her home in the Heights neighborhood was later sold at
a foreclosure auction. The new owners discovered the re-
mains in a wall space after noticing a broken floorboard
in the attic in March 2017.
Preliminary autopsy results last summer indicated the
remains were Cerruti. The skeleton was found with a pair
of glasses and shoes.
