NO
It is an unfortunate, yet unavoidable fact that Baytown,
the Houston region, state and nation contain unsavory
characters who have chosen to make ends meet by taking
advantage of unsuspecting people.
Some people are fortunate enough to go through their
lives without ever having to confront antagonistic people
with malicious or even violent intentions. But breezing
through life while counting your lucky stars is ill-advised.
It behooves the average layperson to know some
self-defense.
To be clear, self-defense training is not about protecting
your stuff but protecting your safety, i.e. you can get an-
other purse but you can’t get another life.
On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Baytown
Community Center, 2407 Market St., there will be a free
self-defense class for men and women ages 13 and up.
The program will teach quick and easy escape techniques
and will cover frontal attacks, rear attacks, wrist grabs
with an introduction to gun defense, and the kubaton -a
self-defense keychain.
Learning self-defense is important. Self-defense re-
minds you that you’re not invincible, but also not inde-
fensible. Register online at www.baytown.org
And speaking of self defense, don’t forget the annual
Shots for Tots event is Saturday.
The state requires children to receive a variety of vac-
cines before enrolling in public schools. By immunizing
all school children, society develops a “herd immunity,”
so even if one child contracts a disease, it does not spread
to others and create an outbreak.
Free back-to-school immunizations are being offered
through the Shots for Tots program and Goose Creek
CISD, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Baytown
and Harris Health System, for eligible children 2 months
to 18 years old. To be eligible, you must have Medicaid
or no health insurance.
The event will be held at Ross S. Sterling High School
Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children’s shot re-
cords are reviewed and parental consent is obtained prior
to immunizations. If under the age of 18, par ent/guardian
must be present.
Immunizations are on a first-come, first-served basis.
It’s important for students to be immunized to help
keep diseases out of the schools.
So before they roll up their sleeves and get to work on
school projects, be sure your children roll up their sleeves
for immunizations. It’s all part of a healthy education.

AP FACT CHECK: Trump & collusion
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump de-
nied Tuesday there was any “collusion” between his pres-
idential campaign and Russia, and declared that “collu-
sion is not a crime” anyway. Case closed? Not exactly.
A look at the buzz tenn “collusion” and what we’re re-
ally talking about:
TRUMP on Twitter Tuesday: “Collusion is not a crime,
but that doesn’t matter because there was No Collusion
(except by Crooked Hillary and the Democrats)!
THE FACTS: It is correct to say that election collu-
sion isn’t a precise legal tenn. (While we’re at it, election
“meddling” isn’t either.) The U.S. code mostly uses the
term “collusion” in antitrust laws to address crimes like
price fixing.
But there are plenty of specific laws on the books that
could apply if Trump’s presidential campaign is found to
have collaborated with Moscow, including a conspiracy
to defraud the United States. There are also laws against
election fraud, computer hacking, wire fraud and falsify-
ing records, if those apply.
So far, special counsel Robert Mueller has accused the
Russians of hacking into Democrats’ computers and steal-
ing emails, as well as trying to stoke U.S. tensions before
the 2016 election using social media. Mueller has already
accused Trump’s fonner campaign chairman and another
top aide of working as foreign agents for Ukrainian inter-
ests and funneling millions of dollars from the work into
offshore accounts used to fund lavish lifestyles.
Mueller might decide, for example, that a crime was
committed if he finds evidence that an American was in-
volved in the hack of Democrats, either by soliciting it or
paying someone to do it.
The investigation also has exposed Moscow’s aggres-
sive outreach to the Trump campaign, including a promise
of “dirt” on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in a meeting
attended by Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr.
If Trump or his aides knew in advance that Russia had
the trove of stolen emails and did nothing to alert feder-
al authorities, they could be accused of covering up the
crime of stolen emails or working as foreign agents. Al-
though it’s rare for the Justice Department to charge peo-
ple for not reporting illegal behavior, it’s also not often
that a special counsel team, with a wide-ranging mandate
to find wrongdoing, is on the case.
As well, a conspiracy to defraud the United States can
be used to refer to any two people using “deceit, craft, or
trickery” to interfere with governmental functions, such
as an election.
In other words, “collusion” might be shorthand. But if
it relates to Russia and U.S. elections, it can still be very
much against the law.
