The Blacklands Railroad began operations in 1999 on
an abandoned Southern Pacific rail line that stretched
from Mt. Pleasant to Greenville, Texas. In 2010, the
Company expanded to operate another shortline rail-
road, the Henderson-Overton Branch (HOB), that
stretched from Overton to Henderson, Texas which
interchanges with the UP main line at Overton. In
2011, Blacklands Railroad was awarded the Short Tine
Railroad of the Year by Railway Age. The Company fur-
ther diversified in 2014 by creating a subsidiary, Black
Gold Terminals, specializing in transloading, contract
switching, and industrial rail parks. In 2019, it opened
a locomotive shop in Tongview, TX along with Black-
lands Locomotive Services to provide repair and main-
tenance services to locomotive owners at a great value.

and precision. For some patients, this can mean less soft
tissue damage; for others, greater bone preservation”
said Dr. David Hester, Director of Orthopedics at Ortho-
pedics & Sports Medicine at Titus.
“Mako’s 3D CT allows me to create a personalized plan
based on each patient’s unique anatomy all before en-
tering the operating room. During surgery, I can validate
that plan and make any necessary adjustments while
guiding the robotic arm to execute that plan. It’s exciting
to be able to offer this transformative technology across
the joint replacement service line to perform total knee
and total hip replacements.”
“This addition to our orthopedic service line is a game
changer. We are proud to be the first hospital in our area
to offer this highly advanced robotic technology” said
Terry Scoggin, CEO of Titus Regional. “This technolo-
gy in the hands of our superior orthopedic surgeons in
Dr. David Hester and Dr. Michael Pappas demonstrates
TRMC is well positioned to offer OUR community for-
ward thinking surgery access points close to home.”
Governor GregAbbott today issued a proclamation
in recognition of Sexual Assault Survivors Day in Tex-
as. House Bill 2298, authored by Representative Tan
Parker during the 86th Legislative Session, established
January 28th as Sexual Assault Survivors Day in Tex-
as. This day is a time for Texans to come together to
build awareness around the issue of sexual assault and
to recognize the courage of survivors throughout the
Lone Star State.
Texans are encouraged to honor survivors today as the
State of Texas continues its mission to encourage heal-
ng and empowerment for survivors of sexual violence.
Texans can also use the hashtag #TXSexualAssaultSur-
vivorsDay to share their support on social media.
The Governor’s Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force
(SASTF) was established in 2019 to ensure a survi-
vor-centered, trauma-informed, collaborative and
coordinated response to sexual violence experienced
by adults and children across the state. The SASTF
brings together various professionals and survivors
who are singularly focused on delivering critical sys-
tem improvements on behalf of Texas sexual assault
survivors. In honor of all Texas survivors, the SASTF
will convene its first quarterly meeting of 2021 today,
January 28th, in recognition of Sexual Assault Survi-
vors Day.
“Our state is extremely grateful for the courage
shown by survivors who bravely share their stories
and lend their voices to this cause, as well as for the
many law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges,
and organizations like the Sexual Assault Survivors’
Task Force, who continue to fight for the safety of all
Texans,” reads the Governor’s proclamation. “I encour-
age all Texans to join me in renewing our commitment
to ending sexual assault and empowering survivors.
Texans are not overcome when faced with adversity;
together, we can protect the vulnerable, help victims
find healing, and bring offenders to justice.”
“On this special day of recognition and every other
day, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas (CACTX) is
proud to honor all survivors who display incredible
bravery, courage and perseverance on their path to
survivorship,” said Justin Wood, General Counsel and
Vice President of External Relations for the Children’s
Advocacy Centers of Texas (SASTF Steering Commit-
tee member).
“Sexual Assault Survivors Day honors the strength
and resilience of survivors across the state and serves
as a reminder of the commitment of support they de-
serve from their communities. The Texas Association
Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) is thankful the SASTF
includes a multidisciplinary approach to the process,
ensuring that future policy solutions will center the
voices and experiences of sexual assault survivors,”
said Rose Luna, CEO of TAASA (SASTF Steering Com-
mittee member).
Work on a new highway to improve mobility and
connectivity in northern Camp County will begin
soon according to plans approved in January by the
Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
“The new State Loop 255 will connect US 271 and
Farm to Market Road 1520 in northern Camp County’’
said Tommy Bruce, area engineer for TxDOT in Mount
Pleasant. “Most of the route will be on new location
except for a section that will be on the current County
Road 2116 between US 271 and County Road 2110. The
new highway will have two 12-foot traffic lanes with
10-foot paved shoulders on each side.”
R & G Construction of Marshall, Tx., was awarded
the contract for the construction project with a bid of
$5.6 million.
Work on the project should begin in March of this
year and take about two years to complete, Bruce
said.
Instead of the traditional in-paper copy that folks have to pick up, fill in, and return;
we have moved to an “all digital” voting platform. Everyone will go to our website
and open the Readers’ Choice ballot and can write in their favorites in every catego-
ry.....or if you’re featured, they can just hit the vote button. We are using a third-party
vendor for the platform to ensure all fairness in voting procedures and winner re-
sults. A couple of our sister papers have already used and loved it. The response of
votes has broken all records from the old way and the businesses have been very
excited at the response.
Gable Continued from page 1
Gable has been known for years for his service in
the Animal Services department and in the 911 PSAP
Communications Center. Gable was honored by the
Ark-Tex Council of Governments in both 2018 and
2019 for dedication in dispatch.
The Police Department said of Gable’s departure,
“We are sad to lose him but excited for his next ad-
venture. Good luck and don’t be a stranger!”
Lee explained that
the terms of the con-
tract may not fit the ex-
pectations of Meeks’s
company and that ad-
justments may need
to be made but that he
believes that entering
into contract negoti-
ation is the best next
step.
Commissioner Ap-
plewhite motioned for
the county to enter
contract negotiations
with Cobern and Nor-
ma Meeks Preferred
Interpreters. Commis-
sioner Parker second-
ed the motion. The
motion was carried
unanimously by the
court.
