West Texas State will compete in
the MVC this season, with an option
for the 1985-86 season. The school has
been a member of the conference
since 1970, and is the sixth to
withdraw in the past 11 years.
Another similarity between jet ski-
ing and motorcycle riding is the cost
involved. Cardinal said he spends
about the same amount of money on
both sports.

A city golf tournament for juniors
gets underway Monday at John Pit-
man Municipal Golf Course in
Hereford.
Boys and girls will play in different
classes with further divisions for
players aged 10 and under, 11 and 12,
13 and 14, and 15 through 17. Par-
ticipants in the youngest category
play nine holes Monday and Tues-
day, while the remaining players
play 18 holes on both days.
Medal play scoring will be used for
all divisions.
Entry fee is $4 and must be paid by
“Total we spent about *100 each
(for the national meet),” he said.
"That includes gasoline, motels, food
and entry fees.”
Entry fee was *29 per person.
Cardinal added he did not know of
many more ways a person could
have as much fun for *100.
"Jet skiing is an addictive kind of
racing,” he said. “If you fall off, the
worst thing that can happen is you
get wet. The skis won’t sink.”
Cardinal explained all water that
fills the skis quickly is gone due to
the unique way the machines are
built.
“The skis just won’t sink.”
Helmets are required, however, in
national racing competition. But
West Texas State will now continue
its study of available options. Those
include applying for admission to an
existing conference or forming a new
league. School officials have been in
contact with representatives of the
Southland, Gulf Star and Lone Star
conferences concerning possible ad-
mission.
West Texas State currently com-
petes in Division I-AA in football and
who raced motorcycles before,” he
said. “That’s what I did.”
With quite a few jet skiers in
Hereford, Cardinal said, he could of-
fer only one bit of advice.
"Don’t run over any boats, and it’s
a great way to have fun.”

He will have to get in quite a bit
more practice next year if he wants
to see similar results in the competi-
tion. Next year, Cardinal said he
wants to compete in the expert class
at nationals.
It is in the expert class that cash
prizes in addition to trophies are
awarded to the winners. Cardinal
said the winner of the expert class in
1984 received *5,000 for the victory.
The 24-year-old skier weighs 156
pounds and is 6-feet tall. His lean
weight and slim build undoubtedly
aid his performance.
' ‘The lighter a rider is, the easier it
is to jet ski," he said. “If you’re light,
it’s not as hard to get out of the water
and pick up speed on the skis.”

Looking for a big discount when you buy a
tractor? Don’t get stuck with an even bigger dis-
count when you want to trade.
Always consider resale value when you
price a field tractor. Because the differences
among brands may sometimes be bigger than
ANY purchase incentive.
Compare John Deere with our two leading
competitors. According to the Spring 1984
Official Guide of the National Farm and Power
Equipment Dealers Association, the average
5-year-old John Deere 4440 sells for 106 percent
of its 1979 list price. One leading competitor
averages 87 percent of its 1979 list price. The
other averages 73 percent.
What’s that mean in dollars? Add the John
Deere gain on original price to the competitor s
loss. ’ rhe John Deere advantage is as much
as $8,938!

An event that combines a lot of
water skiing and boating, with a little
bit of motorcycle riding, is the fast-
action sport of jet skiing.
And no one knows better about the
sport than Kevin Cardinal, who
recently won the Central Region Na-
tionals slalom competition in Austin.
Cardinal beat 79 other skiers in the
superstock division of the novice
class.
The competition was held at Town
Lake in Austin July 20-29.
“I’ve been riding jet skis since
1978,” Cardinal said. “But I had no
dea how we (he and another rider
from Hereford, Orlan Douglas)
would do at Austin. Nobody from
here had ever gone before.”
Cardinal said the only qualification
he had to meet in order to compete at
the national level was be a member
of the International Jet Ski Boating
Association.
“That’s one of the great things
about jet skiing,” he said. "The best
jet skier I’ve ever seen was a lady
who never had water skied and never
ridden a motorcycle. It’s not that
hard. You don’t have to be an
expert.”
The jet ski is comparable to a surf-
board with a motor. Cardinal said.

Is this only true of one model? No. Every 40
Series 90- to 180-hp tractor has an average resale
price that’s higher than its new price five years ago.
Is resale your only John Deere advantage?
No. Don’t forget the remarkable fuel efficiency of
today’s 50 Series John Deere Tractors. And don’t
forget our unmatched reputation for high quality
and high reliability. See your John Deere dealer.

tween a low-price tractor and a low-cost John

“All of us felt, inevitably, that
West Texas State would seek and
find another conference alignment
with schools that are compatible,”
Don Davis, athletic director and
head football coach, said after the
school’s Board of Regents approved
the move unanimously on Wednes-
day. “I think in a lot of ways. West

rode traveled at nearly 42 miles per
hour, he claimed.
Kawasaki is the only manufac-
turer of jet skis, he said.
“Every week, we practiced about
four or five hours at Ute Lake in
Logan, N.M.,” Cardinal said. “We
got in quite a bit of practice this
year.”
Cardinal received a trophy for his
efforts at Austin.
