Catholic Church in Spain drops opposition of condoms
MADRID, Spain (AP) - The Catholic
Church in Spain has said it supports the use of
condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS.
"Condoms have a place in the global pre-
vention of AIDS/' Juan Antonio Martinez
Campos, spokesman for the Spanish Bishops
Conference, told reporters after a meeting
Tuesday with Health Minister Elena Salgado
to discuss ways of fighting the disease,
The Catholic Church has repeatedly
rebuffed campaigns for it to endorse the use of
condoms in the fight against AIDS.

Bike group makes drivers share

"Critical Massers" gathered
from different directions, much
like birds on electrical wires.
They came riding vari-
ous road, town and tradi-
tional three-speed bicycles,
bundled in winter clothing,
and stopped in front of the
Environmental Education,
Science and Technology build-
ing for their ninth bicycle ride.
"We hit heavy traffic and
get in so people see us," Chad
Boey, Denton senior, said.
But Critical Massers are
not bicycle-anarchists. The
idea behind Critical Mass
is the power of its presence
as a flock.
"It's not really a protest,"
Boey said. "We're cyclists; we're
on the road. This is a legitimate
mode of transportation."
Critical Mass is an infor-
mal organization of 15 stu-
dents and alumni that meets
for one or two hour rides, at
5:45 p.m. on the first Friday
of each month.
Most have probably seen
them before, riding around
campus or filling an entire
street lane on busy roads like
Carroll Street and University
Drive, always packed together.

"It's like a moving island of
fun," Douglas George, Colby,
Kan. doctoral student, said.
George is a devoted member
of Critical Mass.
He has been riding with
the group since it started
last year.
"I met some people that
had ridden [like Critical
Mass] before and Bernadette
was one," George said.
"We had a discussion a
year ago. It was January
of last year, and we talked
about it and talked about it
until June."
Critical Massers picked
signs and tied them to their
torsos or on their bikes with
string. On this particular ride,
Julie Nahrgang, Denton resi-
dent, brought a small card-
board sign emblazoned with
slogans like "honk if you
[heart] bicycles" and "Pedal
Power Over Petrol."
At 6 p.m., they took off,
cruising through campus
at a modest speed and then
down Hickory, taking a
detour on Carroll heading
south and then back around
onto Locust, heading north
for a scenic route around the
Downtown Square.
Pedaling at a moderate
speed, they hit traffic on their
way to University, where they
hit heavier traffic due to con-
struction, before returning
back to the Downtown Square
for a short break.
All the while the hyper-
energetic George whistled
loudly, calling attention to
the group, and the occasional
driver honked in applause.
And the group remains
dense, never thinning out,
especially at stop lights
where testing a yellow light
can prove dangerous for the
lone rider.
George told new Critical
Massers, riding in the back,
not to stop at an intersection
light because it is safer to stay
with the group.
"That's called corking,"
he said.
Critical Mass's philoso-
phy is the group is safe
in large numbers, and for
good reason.
Bernadette Donahue,
Denton graduate student,
investigated the mobility
bicyclists have with bicy-
cle routes made through
Denton and found that the
routes do not connect.
"What's going to hap-
pen if somebody gets hit
on Carroll?" Donahue
asked rhetorically, speak-
ing from experience.
So far the group has been
stopped three times by
authorities, George said.
The first time was in
August, near Denton High,
when a police officer on a
motorcycle rode by them,
calling their attention with
her bullhorn.
"The cop said she had
gotten calls," George said.
Apparently, rush-hour driv-
ers were not thrilled when
they took up a whole lane
on Bell Street.

MELISSA FERRO/NT DAILY
Julie Nahrgang, Denton resident, passes out signs for the
ninth Denton Critical Mass bicycle ride.
The history of Critical
Mass started in August 1992
in San Francisco, after a San
Francisco Bike Coalition
meeting, wrote Christ
Carlsson in his 1993 essay
"Critical Mass From the
Inside Out."
Carlsson told the bicyclists
of San Francisco, who wanted
to make their presence felt
after "infamously bad" condi-
tions, to ride in a group dur-
ing rush hour once a month.
Now there are Critical
Masses in major cities across the
nation and as far as Australia.
