Mr. I. H. Kempner,
Galveston, Texas.
Dear Ike:
I have just read your letter of the 12th. You and I are old-time
friends, and so therefore I am sure you will believe me when I say that I
was not conscious of any omission or oversight in your masterful discharge
of the duties of toastmaster at the splendid dinner which you fine people of
Galveston tendered a week ago last Monday night to the members of the Rivers
and Harbors Committee party. After all, I was not only in the house of my
friends, but I was at home, and certainly required no special mention from
you or anyone else. I was there as a home town man, you might say, with no
other purpose or desire than to be of service to our deer friend Judge Mans-
field, and to try to act as a sort of steering committee chairman to keep the
Committee on even keel and on time, if possible.
You did a magnificent job, as always, in presiding over the banquet,
and so far as I am concerned I will not permit your case of remorse to con-
tinue.
I got rid of the Committee at Fort Worth Monday afternoon and, while
I regretted that they were leaving Texas, I say frankly that I am happy the
trip did not continue for more days. We had a delightful trip from start to
finish. The Committee saw practically every port and waterway in the State
and then visited San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth, all of which
places have waterway ambitions, as you are well aware. I cannot help but
fl feel that the visit will be productive of real benefit to our State for many
years to come.
With warmest personal regards, I am
Sincerely our riend,
Roy Mil er.
