Dear Mr. Kempner
Mr. Rayburn answered my letter last week and I
was disappointed in the answer. I enclose the letter
for you, although he probably sent you a copy of it.
I'm afraid my connection with Texas is so remote
that an appointment from that state is too much to hope
for. In the meantime, Mrs. France has been trying
some other angles and it seems that John's grandfather
has found a possibility of getting an appointment from
Connecticut. He owns some property there and I believe,
casts his vote there. We have great hopes that it will
develop. John is going to summer school and I do believe
that if worse comes to worse that he'll be able to pass
the Presidential well up in the group. We're letting
him think it is his only possibility. The Navy is more
popular than I thought it would be in Texas and all
politicians have their obligations, so I think we may
as well drop the Texas angle.
Captain Roland wrote that he had seen Ikary Jean.
I think they must have been in Guam, as her article
published about that time was on conditions in Guam. I
have read all her articles in Vogue and have found them
thoroughly interesting. It's wonderful that she is hav-
ing this experience. I'm not sure that Captain Roland
made contact with Lieut. Godwin. He said he intended to
try to locate him. Your letters have meant so much to
Captain Roland.
With so many troops being shipped out from the West
Coast, I have been very hopeful that he -would be ordered
back for a load of them. So far nothing has developed
along that line. His ship was in excellent condition and
unless the typhoon banged it up a bit, it doesn't need
repairs...another possibility that might bring them hack.
Idleness is getting boresome. Volunteer activities
are fine for filling in the time but I'm anxious to do
something more stimulating and have been attending a
business school with teen agers taking shorthand and typ-
ing and hope to take some position of responsibility soon.
It will pass the time more quickly.;::'
