VIENNA, Austria, July 28-
Four young Polish air cadets,
flying two stolen training planes,
landed in Austria today after
dramatic 400-mile night flights to
freedom from behind the Iron Cur-
tain.
They said airport guards in Po-
land spotted their getaway and
opened fire on them—with anti-
aircraft guns, they thought. There
were no hits.
The two planes came down 60
miles apart in lower Austria. The
four anti-Communist airmen asked
for political asylum to escape
"unbareable living conditions”
in Poland.
The bold flights came 15 days
after seven Hungarians seized a
commercial airliner in a fight
aboard the plane and flew it to
West Germany. Exactly a month
ago a workers' uprising in Poznan,
Poland, broke out and was ■ put
down bloodily.
The four Poles said they took
off last night from Deblin. south-
east of Warsaw, with intentions of
flying to Munich in West Germany,
But they said they ran danger-
ously low on fuel after bad weath-
er knocked them off their course.
They were still 200 miles short
of their goal after flying over
Czechoslovakia and southern Po-
land.
The four told police they had
made secret preparations for a
month before risking the chance.
