AP Automotive Editor
DETROIT (AP)—Broad appear-
ance changes are coming in the
1959 model automobiles. They
yere planned long before the lag

ministration's rural telephone see-
tion.
The system will be fully auto-
matic and will require no full-time
attendants, Gross said. Plant su-
perintendent is Aubrey Martin.
With the dial conversion will
come new numbers for subscribers,
which now number approximately
300, Gross said. Local calls will
be two letters and five digits —
such as HYacinth 7-0000.
Other officers of the company
are Mrs. Gross, vice president, and
Minnie Swisher, vice president.
In new car sales began but the
industry hopes they will help bol-
ster a sharp comeback next year.
Some cars will be longer: a few
wUI be lower. Others will have
that appearance due to changes
in their lines. There will be dras-
tie changes in front and rear
lighting installations. There will
be more color combinations. Most
radiator grilles will be changed.
More glass will be used. More
aluminum will go into functional
use as well as in trim applica-
tions
Most of General Motors' various
lines will be entirely new because
of its new body shell that replaces
two of-the three currently used.

A whole new car in two suc-
cessive years is unusual in the in-
dustry. Ford, which topped Chev-
rolet in production and sales last
year, has been ousted from that
position by Chevrolet this year. In
an effort to regain some of its
lost volume Ford is making broad
exterior design changes tor 1959.
Engineering changes will not be
nearly as extensive, although
there will be one new engine in
top Chrysler models and there
will be more pushbutton controls.
Tires pn standard size cars will
remain at 15-inch and 14-inch di-
ameters. When the’14-inch wheels
were announced a couple of years
ago it was said there would be
further reduction to 13 inches. So
far no car maker has indicated a
13-inch wheel is planned.
Over-all, the positioning of front
and rear lighting systems will con-
tribute substantially to the
changed appearance of the 1959
models. More of the front and rear
lamps, positioned one above the
other. will be canted, flaring out-
ward.
