NT athlete competes at NCAA meet
NBA Finals Preview
Brad McDonnell
Sports Editor
After jumping over 44 feet in the
triple jump at the Texas Relays in
Austin on April 4, NT freshman
Brandi Stan field fulfilled coach
Rick Watkins' anticipations re-
garding her potential.
Following the end of NT's in-
door track season on Feb. 25, just
weeks before the start of the out-
door season, Watkins commented
on Stanfield's outlook for the re-
mainder of the year.
"I'm excited to see what the future
holds for her here at North Texas,"
Watkins said after Stanfield's in-
door victory in the triple jump at
the Sun Belt Conference meet.
Stanfield's school-record leap of
44-3 1/2 at the Texas Relays landed
her a spot in the NCAA National
Track and Field Championships
held from June 7-10. The jump is
the fifth-best in the nation this out-
door season, trailing the leader by
just over two feet.
Stanfield is the first NT field
athlete to compete at nationals in
18 years. The 19-year-old Austin
native is scheduled to perform on
June 8 at the A.G. Sports Complex
in Sacramento, Calif.
The triple jump event will fea-
ture 28 Division-IA women from
across the country. Last season's
winner, UCLA's Candice Bauchan,
posted a jump of 46-2, which set
the all-time championship record.
The average winning result
for the past five seasons is 44-9,
less than six inches more than
Stanfield's season best. Moreover,
Stanfield's mark betters two of the
past five winners.
Miami's Tabia Charles and
Brenda Faluade lead this sea-
son's triple jump field, but Stan-
field is not far behind. Charles
averaged 44-8 in her top three
jumps of the season, while Fa-
luade averaged 43-6. Stanfield's
three best results have posted an
average of 42-9.

Former Mean Green RB
Cobbs lands NFL deal

draft. Terms of the contract were
not released.
Cobbs totaled over 4,000
rushing yards for the Mean Green
and led the NCAA in rushing with
152.7 yards per game in 2003.
Denton to host three
Sun Belt events
NT will host the Sun Belt
Conference soccer tournament
and outdoor track and field meet
in 2008, along with the 2009
Sun Belt softball tournament
announced at the conference's

Team stats
Dwyane Wade is among the
best in the NBA, and he'll be a
tough cover,forcing Dallas notto
use Jason Terry and Devin Harris together.
imm\ .
Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard '
are the Mavericks' two best
players, averaging a combined
45.8 points and 19.1
rebounds per game.
The Mavs' duo will
dominate Udonis
Haslem and Antonio
Walker along with the
test of the Miami Heat
forwards.
í_
It will take more than just Erick
Dampier and DeSagana Diop to
stop Shaquille O'Neal. The hack-
a-Shaq tactic could make an appearance.

HI
Depth is perhaps the Mavericks'
most valuable weapon with the
likes of Jerry Stackhouse, Devin
Harris and Keith Van Horn. Center Alonzo
Mourning and guard Gary Payton are assets
offthe bench forthe Heat, but the Mavericks
have the edge.
