Although we deliberately engineered improved
gas mileage into the '59 Buicks, we have not
made much point of it in previous advertising
for THE Car. People’s driving habits can get
very different results even from the same car.
So we are now happy to report that our plans
for greater economy of operation have been
very successful indeed ... in everyday owner
experience.

connected with alcohol. They
weren't all tired old adults or Skid
Row bums by a long shot either.
My third reason is a rule of
thumb on which I ty to base'all
my decisions.
When I used to go to my friend
and high school principal Mack
Craig with all those early prob-
lems and choices he'd say: “For-
get what it means to you person-
ally, or what you gain by it, or
have to give up, or what someone
else might think of it. Just ask
yourself: ‘Is it right?’ ”
FEEL RELIEVED
When you look at life from that
perspective the decisions aren't
so hard and you always feel re-
lieved. Of course, putting it into
practice is what “ain't easy.”
We talked earlier about people

And that means a double re-

people for whom you "glow.”
Now, maybe I could drink and

isn’t much question as to whether
it’s desirable to be prompt
thoughtful, sincere, and so on. But
there are other habits that are
obviously not desirable.
SWEARING HABIT
There’s the swearing habit It’s
not only truly insulting to religious
people but it’s a symtom of char-

both sets of parents handled us
identically. "I you are going to
smoke, and we strongly advise
against it, please do it here at
home and don't sneak.” I think
it takes a lot of the excitement
out of those first cigarettes if they
aren’t forbidden fruit.
Shirley and I both decided
against smoking. Her reasons were
that it wasn't very attractive, and
it wasn't feminine. Mine, at first,
were partially that I was interest-
ed in sports and that none of the
people I liked and admired most
smoked. When I started college, I
did a little detective work on the
smoking habit.
TOUGH TO BREAK
Of all the habits I've heard about,
smoking seems to be one of the
toughest to break. My suggestion

LONG LIST
It isn't possible to go down the
list of all the attractive habits you
may choose to develop as teen-
agers. It isn’t necessary either.
You don’t need to have them spell-
ed out. I know that from your
letters. Still there is one last item
I would like to add because it has
been pretty valuable to me person-
ally: the habit of minding my
own business.
I found this habit, faithfully cul-
tivated, kept me out of a lot of
unnecessary difficulties By it I
meant a little more than eaves-
dropping or being nosey. though,

We've discussed earlier qyite a
Ri of habits and how they may
be acquired or defeated — the
“tomorrow" habit versus "Jam
Today," study habits, the art of
listening, good manners
Listening, the art of controlling
my body so I could focus my mind,
acquired so painfully during my
early days in church, in Donel-
son, Tenn , was a lifesaver after
my wife Shirley and I moved to
New York. There. I was attending
Columbia University snd had a
pretty full TV and work schedule.
I had to alter my study habits to
suit the schedule, catch up at the
last minute, drag books around
with me and do my work on bus-
es. in cabs. over a ham sandwich
at a lunch counter, at odd moments
on stage during rehearsal. I
couldn't have made the grade
this way except for one thing. I
depended heavily on what I learn-
ed in class. I didn’t dare miss a
lecture, or a word the prof said.
And in tell you for sure-that I
could not. all of a sudden, have
developed the ability to concen-
trate. I remembered what it had
taken me years snd several spank-
ings to acquire earlier

I've asked some of the teens so
generally accused. They can read
all right. What they haven! de-
veloped is the reading habit.
And what a good habit to over-

fellow who develops the reading
habit, the whole world, all periods

HONESTY. SINCERITY
Did you ever think of honesty
- and sincerity as habits? Well. they
are. Deceit and untruthfulness,
whether with ourselves or others,
begin to operate just like the old-
fashioned tongue twister. Each
time we repeat the offense we get
more and more mixed up. and far-
ther and farther from the straight

When I think about sincerity I
think maybe one of the reasons
I have always worked so hard
toward having it to my personal
make-up, Is that there is one form
of insincerity that to me is pretty
herd to take. What is it? Flattery!
Honest praise and kind words
are two of the finest things I know.
That's why, I guess. I hate to see
them caricatured by insincerity.
