plorers are making preparations

popular numbers for the show,
which will be broadcast live in

Fort Worth area in “The Best
Band of the Year Contest" under i
the auspices of the American’ Fed-1
eration of Musicians, Local 72 of
Fort Worth.
LAKE WORTH CASINO
The Sunday competition will be
held at 3 p.m. .at the Lake Worth
Casino. Admission la M cento.
Dr. M. E. Hall, director, said
the winner of the Fort Worth com-
petition will be entered in region-
al competition, which will select
entrants for the national contest.
The band winning the national
competition will be awarded a
Decca recording contract, instru-
ments for all band members and
a tour of the nation to play in
outstanding ballrooms.
SEVERAL ENTERED
Several hundred bands through-
out the nation will be entered in
the competition, which is being
held to promote interest in new
bands.
Members of the band are Bob
Foutz, Tom Wirtel, Bucky Milam,
and Marvin Stamm, trumpets;
Morgan Powell, Dee Barfton and
Bob Beigler, trombones; Joe
Riggs, John Scarborough. Ed Sum-
merlin, Earle Dhus and Herb Por-
ter, saxophones; Gene Gandy, pi-
ano; Tony Pondant. drum, and
Don Ratteree, bass violin.

Snow Avalanche
ASPEN. Colo. (AP> — Three
young skiers ventured onto a post-
ed trail Tuesday and touched off
a thundering avalanche of snow
and rock. One of them waa killed.
The body of Gary MacGivern,
21, Seattle, was dug from 10 feet
of snow by his companion. Rich-
ard Walker, and other rescuers.
Walker, also 21 and from Seat-

parently were in search of powder

A four-man team of Denton civil
defense workers was to give a
special briefing before a joint ses-
sion of the New Mexico state sen-
ate and the state legislature today
in Santa Fe
- ’ They are Welcome W. Wilson,
director for the Southwestern reg-
ional headquarters. Office of Civil
and Defense Mobilization; Gaines
F. West, education director; Jack
Wilson, plans and operations direc-
. tor; and Art Dover, continuity of
government specialist.
Attending the briefing will be
New Mexico Gov. John Burroughs,
state senators and representatives,
and civil defense directors of met-
ropolitan areas in the state.
PURPOSE
Purpose of the briefing is to ex-
plain the state’s survival planning
program and to assist initsim-
, plementation. \ *
Immediate objectives of the pro-
r gram are:
1. To obtain and train a state
civil detense staff that will be cap-
