Preparations are now being com-
pleted by the American Legion Aux-
iliary for the annual poppy sale and
observance of Memorial Day.
The poppies sold are made by dis-
abled veterans and the proceeds from
the sale are turned over to the hos-
pitals and veterans’ bureaus for the
care of the disabled veterans and
their families.
This is one cause where everyone
has a chance to help and it is a cause
that is indeed worthy. Every man,
woman and child should wear a
poppy on Memorial Day and remem-
ber when buying that while the low-
est price is only a dime, that there is
no limit to the amount that can be
paid, and the additional moneys giv-

The judges in the beautification
contest which ended Tuesday were
very high in their praise of the yards
and the wondrful work that the res-
ideuts of Mercedes had done in the
city beautification.
The improvement over last year
is remarkable, was the comment of
the judges who served last year as
well as in the campaign that just
closed. They advised that tie prople
take more advantage of the advice
of expert landscape artists in plan-
ning their work. Many will wonder
about the decisions given, but awards
were made in all instances on the
correctness of the work as well as the
care of the property. Many peopl?
feel that if they plant many beds of
flowers and shrubbery and care for
them properly that they have an at-
tractive yard, which in many in-
stances is correct, but from the
standpoint of true beautification
they are in many instances as far
wrong as if their yard was entirely
void of flowers.
Flowers should never be planted
around trees ,or on the parking. A
good, well kept lawn of grass is one
of the greatest assets and flowers
and shrubbery should be planted on-
ly as they are adapted to the par-
ticular style of architecture of the
home. It is always advisable to con-
sult a competent landscape archi-
tect before planting or planning a
yard as it will mean much in years
to come.
Native plants and trees are recom-
mended when ever possible to retain
them as they carry out the true at-
mosphere of this country.
The churches are badly neglected
as a whole and these are properties
that should receive the best of care
since they are so prominent.
