When the average high school
student gets ready to apply to
college, the first step is usually
to take a college admissions
test. Most colleges and univer-
e sities ask students to submit a
“ score from a standardized,
nationally-administered college
admission test as part of their
application package, and-most
high school students have had
experience with standardized
tests.
But what about the student
with a disability? When these
a students plan on a college
® education, the standardized
-test is often perceived as a
potential obstacle. Today, for-
tunately, there is a greater
awareness of the special ar-
rangements that can make
standardized tests more ac-
cessible to students with
-disabilities.
The Rehabilitation Act of
O 1973, often referred to as the
first civil rights bill for the han-
dicapped, includes re-
quirements that pertain to the
-“reasonable accomodations’’
that must be provided in order
for a handicapped individual to
-perform a job. Although the law
does not specifically address ac-
:cessible testing of the handicap-
6 -ped, most standardized test
sponsors have voluntarily
1 developed special versions of
: their college admission tests
and related materials.
By definition, standardized
testing means that each stu-
•dent takes the same test under
;the same conditions. But when
these tests are given to han-
Q dicapped students, each stu-
- dent’s special needs must be
considered on an individual
basis.
