Some 200 people turned out Tuesday
evening to sing Happy Birthday to
Bessie Heard, founder of the Heard
Natural Science and Wildlife Sanctuary
in McKinney.
Turning 100 on May 26, Miss Bessie
was the guest of honor at the Bessie
Heard Centennial Gala at the Harvey
Hotel in Plano.
Attending the gala were friends and
family and past and present board
members, staff members and volunteers.
As a special surprise, Miss Bessie
received a brithday card from President
and Mrs. Ronald Reagan and Governor
and Mrs. Mark White.
McKinney Mayor Jim Ledbetter pro-
claimed May 20-26 Bessie Heard week in
McKinney and Plano Mayor Pro Tem
Ron Harris named May 26 as Bessie
Heard Day in Plano.
As part of the decorations, a quilt was
displayed behind the head table. The quilt
was made by volunteers during the past
year. Each square represented different
phases and events of Miss Bessie’s life.
John Ripley Forbes, chairman of the
board of the Natural Science for Youth
Foundation was the main speaker for the
event. He was instrumental in helping
Miss Bessie start the museum.
Forbes said when Miss Bessie first ap-
proached him it was with the intention of
donating her money to other organiza-
tions.
When he suggested that she start her
own wildlife sanctuary, Miss Bessie
displayed hesitance because of her age
