Some people are so good at not reading signs. All around us
are signs to read and heed, yet many people never seem to take
note of them. It has little to do with illiteracy; they just don’t
bother to read them.
Road signs might be the one exception. More people seem to
read and follow road directions than other signs, which is
understandable. After all, reading or not reading road signs can
be a matter of life and death, and the majority of us are natural-

ly more alert when it gets down to the nitty-gritty of life.
But, put a sign on a door or window, or some other place that
doesn’t pose a threat to anybody, and watch the activity that
ensues. At least 50 percent of the people who walk by the sign,
never acknowledge its being there unless it is brought to their
attention. If you doubt the validity of this statement, stand
within viewing distance of double-glass doors, one of which has
been locked to avoid the wind popping if off its hinges.
So what happens? Along comes the first person for whom the
sign was intended and give the door a hard, swift push. Taken
aback that the door doesn’t open to his touch, he pauses, decides
it must be stuck, then pushes again, harder. Still disbelieving,
he quickly scans the door and jamb, finally discovers the sign,
reads it, and passively enters the other door.
It is next to impossible for some strollers to pass a park bench
without trying it out, and surely no sign could deter them. Only
after they arise from having sat do they become convinced that
“Wet Paint” literally means just that, whether it be one of the
primary colors or a dozen different combinations thereof.
In a hospital corridor, some small clusters of people chatter
like a nest of squirrels as they pass the “Quiet Please” sign.
They would never notice the sign or pay it any heed, if an RN
didn’t put her finger to her lips and signal them to silence.
“No Dogs Allowed” some signs read, yet some owners with
their precious Spots, Fidos, of Fifties perched on their arms
breeze past the sign as if they had been lettered with invisible
ink. More often than not, the dog lovers are highly offended
when the store keeper or restauranteur asks them to kindly
remove the canine from the premises.
One cashier at an express lane check-out counter was mad
enough to spit. She had just been the recipient of an irate
customer’s verbal tirade when refused check cashing privileges.
“The sign plainly reads ‘No checks cashed in the express lane,’ ”
the cashier said. “They don’t read the signs, and then when you
won’t accept their checks they take it as a personal insult.”
For whatever reason we fail to read sings — and we’re all guil-
ty of it once in a while — we could very well benefit from being
more observant. Let’s see now — “get it together,” “stop,”
“detour,” “newspaper office,” “Editor’s desk.” Make it!
