Swing dancing shakes up Clark Hall
By Kirk Cooper
Intern
Calista Gnerich and Susan
Perry both agree: if Clark Hall
had rafters, students would have
been dancing in them Thurs-
day.
Gnerich, Albequerque, N.M.,
freshman, and Perry, Abilene
freshman, are roommates who
share a common love — the
art of swing dancing. The two
shared their skills with NT stu-
dents Jan. 25 by organizing the
first in a series of swing dance
lessons this semester.
"We both have a passion to
dance," Perry said. "Nobody
ever offers swing dancing.
There was a push for it, but
no one ever took action or did
anything about it. So we decid-
ed to take things into our own
hands."
Bethany Harding, Austin se-
nior and resident advisor at
Clark Hall, helped to organize
the logistics of the event after
Gnerich and Perry pitched their
idea.
"Two residents approached
me and asked if we could have
lessons in the TV room," Har-
ding said. "So we put up signs
and laid the groundwork for it.
There were a lot of people who
came down out of curiosity."
Harding said around 25 to 30

the first lesson, in which ba-
sic steps and a few elementary
moves were explained.
"Everyone seemed excited
about it," Harding said. "People
were asking when the next one
was and where they could go to
get more lessons."
Gnerich and Perry focus on
East Coast swing, which in-
cludes mellow music by artists
like Frank Sinatra, and West
Coast swing, featuring more up-
beat numbers by ensembles like

"I liked learning how to do
the pretzel," said Jenifer Wat-
son, Grand Prairie freshman.
"It's a move that involves a lot
of spinning and a lot of twist-
ing. I eventually fell down, but
it was a lot of fun."
Gnerich, who has been swing
dancing for three years, said
that she got the idea for the les-
sons from a friend at Texas Tech
University.
"It was a huge success over
there. I wanted to start it up over
here," Gnerich said. "There's

salsa, but no swing, and I
thought people would be inter-
ested in it."
Perry said that the lessons
are an effort to set up a swing
dance club at NT by next fall.
Attempts to register the club
with Student Activities and
Organizations last semester
fell through because the group
lacked a sponsor.
"In order to have a club regis-
tered with NT, you have to have
a full-time staff member spon-
soring," Perry said. "Unfortu-
nately last semester, we couldn't
find one before the deadline,
but we're still looking so that
all of NT can participate."
Swing lessons are held ev-
ery other Thursday in the Clark
Hall TV room. Gnerich and
Perry said interested students
can join their Facebook group,
"North Texas Swing Dancing."
"Even if you can't dance well,
still come," Perry said. "It's a
great way to meet people."
