Marquis Ito, the greatest statesman that Japan ever produced and one of
the greatest of any country, has recently been sent as the special representative
from the emperor of Japan to the emperor of Korea. The marquis has fre-
quently been premier and is now head of the council of elder statesmen, or
"kitchen cabinet.” He is frequently spoken of as the "big Ito” in contradistinc-
tion to the admiral of the same name, who la called the "little Ito.” Marquis
Yamagata, another member of the council of elder statesmen, has also headed
several cabinets, besides being Japan’s most famous general. He was the hero
of the war with China and has been a directing force in the wonderful military
evolution of his country.

The famous. Inventor of the Maxim gun has recently contrived a flying
machine, an illustration of which is given herewith. In reality it is a merry
go-roud on a large scale. It resembles a huge umbrella with the ribs pointing
upward. Suspended from the ends of the ribs are fish shaped cars large enough
to hold a considerable number of passengers. These cars, which are suspended
at a height of about fifty feet. are propelled through the air by the circular mo-
tion of the central shaft at a rate of sixty-five miles per hour. The inventor,
Sir Hiram Maxim, says that he will use the funds which he receives through
this machine for the purpose of solving the problem of aerial navigation, a
question to which he intends to devote most of the remainder of his life.

The German antarctic expedition that went in search of the south pole un-
der the leadership of Dr. Vbn Drygalsk, though it finally had to abandon the
attempt, yet accompltshed some valuable teaulta in the way of exploration and
discovery. The tarthest point south rached was Gauss mountain, named for
the steamship in which the expedition salled. The ship was ipelocked for over
a year.. The acompanying picture of the mountain was made from a photo-
graph taken by the exploring party when far inland on the thick pack of ice
that covers most of the mysterlous antarctic continent.
