Another consideration in locating a
church is the population of a place. A
church should .be as near the center of
population jis possible. Why this clus-
ter of church buildings in the heart of
our city? That they may be nearer the
center of our population.
Another feature that I would men-
tion is the fact that a church needs
financial help for its maintenance and
perpetuity. This can be had ordina-
rily only from property owners and
business men. To locate a church in a

of worship. Suppose every church were
closed, every sacred song hushed, every
prayer stilled. There is not a Sane
man in our city who would want to
raise a family where such a condition
prevailed. The value of worship to a
country, a state or a city is incalcula-
ble. Show me where the worshiP of
God has been abandoned, and I will
show you a reign of terror. A ,800d
church where a proper worship of God
is maintained is one of the most pay-
ing investments any city or community
can have. It raises the price of real
estate, it purifies the moral atmos-
phere and enriches all of its environ-
ment. It means better morals, better
citizenship, more faithful and honest
employes. It purifies social life and
raises the standard of domestic and
civic ideals. We do not often set our
selves to imagine what our world
would be without the worship of God.
This underestimate of the value and
, power of worship leads to the neglect
. of it. Even professed Christians aban

This is especially true of the evening
services in our city churches. Inatten-

conception of the power and value of
rship. Another and a baneful re
1 -- a false conception of worship
is shown in the over estimation of
ritualism and elaborate ceremonies,
formalism and other hurtful barriers
to true worship. Sacerdotaism has
crept into too many of our protestant 0gUiI

"God is a spirit, and they that worship Church cemeterv
Him must worship Him in Spirit and
in truth.” In the second place, let us
consider the provisions for worship.
For the proper worship of God there
ought to be a suitable church building.
There are two kinds pt architecture
which should be avoided in building a
church. The first is the old medaeval
cathedral with great outward pretense
but a wholly unsuited interior for
proper worship. I am glad there is a
reform in church architecture from the
old cathedral style. The progress and
1 development of arehitecturo is in a
measure commensurate with the -rise
. and expansion of the soul. The sec-
ond type of church architectre to
which I refer is what may be fittingly
styled barn architecture. This way of
[erecting a great big barn and dedicat-
ing it to God for a place of worship Is
as detrimental to true worship as it is

proper ventilation of a church depends
almost entirely on the location. An
elevation is always preferable to a val-
ley or a swamp. Not only for ventila-

advertising the place of worship. The
belter the location in this particular
the better does it serve as an adver-

in this Intensely practical Age we want
to build churches with a view to utility.
We need Sunday school rooms, a
prayer room, counsel room, robing
(rooms, pastor’s room, etc. Above all,
we want a suitable auditorium, one
conveniently' arranged for speaking
and hearing, conducive to worship in
every detail. We want to avoid the
cathedral; we must avoid the barn.
There is a present day church- build-
ing as there are present day methods
and means.
We oomne lastly to the location of a
church. If we ate to avoid difficulties
to our worship we must take into ac-
count the proper situation of a church.
It would not do to build a church at
the intersection of railroads, where
trains are keeping up a constant puff
and whistle. Nor do I beleve a church
should be located too close to a street
car line. Proper and helpful worship
demands quiet. There is much in a
noiseless location. I think, too, the
