Popular cell phones are not just for talk anymore
By Lauren Hill
Intern
Many noises are heard on
the bus ride home from school:
students chattering, the scut-
tling of feet and fingers furiously
clicking on the keys of the latest
cell phone models.
It started out as a device used to
connect one person to the other,
but now with the fast-paced lives
of students, smartphones such
as the Blackberry, Sidekick and
iPhone are becoming more than
just a phone. They have become
an accessory equipped to cater to
every part of life, Coppell sopho-
more Sasha Ojagh said.
"When students come in, they
are looking for the Sidekick,"
said Matt Cantu, assistant
retail manager at T-Mobile.
"The Blackberry is the second
most popular phone here, and
our newest model offers Wi-Fi
Internet, so it is very popular."
With the Sidekick's large screen
and optimum text messaging
features, it is ideal for students
constantly on the go and is
targeted at the hearing disabled,
Cantu said. The newer models are
sleeker and weigh less, which is
more appealing to buyers.
"It's really an obsession," Cantu
said. "Students will use them
to keep up with professors and
school work, but they are very
trendy and that is the appeal for
many."
But not everyone feels the
obsession over the latest tech-
nology is worth buying into.
Some believe a phone should be
used solely for communication
purposes.
"The fad of the high-tech
phone is just another example of
America's materialistic consumer
ideals that are nearly impossible
to keep up with as technology
advances," Ojagh said.
Even presidential candidates
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama
have been seen with a Blackberry
in hand on the campaign trail.
These devices have captured the
nation's interest, and according
to In-Stat, a communications
market analysis group, sales are
constantly increasing.
However, students will pay a
higher price for the luxury that
comes with one of these phones.
The price tags range from $50 to
$500 depending on the store.
Despite steep prices, many
users consider these trendy
phones a necessity, even refer-
ring to them as "crackberrys."
"I use it every day," Flower
Mound senior Tony Arent said.
"I use it to check my e-mails, I
even use the GPS system. It's even
better than a laptop."

With the latest ceil phone technology, many find themselves dependent on cell
phones. Web browser capability, media player and full keyboard for easy messag-
ing are a few features that make it difficult to avoid addiction.

Sudoku requires no calculation or
arithmetic skills, it is essentially a game
of placing numbers in squares, using
very simple rules of logic and deduction.
The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a
game with the correct numbers. There are three very simple
constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:
• Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9
in any order
• Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through
9 in any order
• Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include
all digits 1 through 9
