HYDE PARK and VICINITY
.3 ■
We, the undersigned citizens of Austin, beg leave to express an
opinion on the subject of street improvements in Hyde Park.
As the splendid gravel drives in Hyde Park have been made, and
forsmany years maintained by the land company controlling the addi-
tion, afford to the general public the best drives in the city, and with-
out cost to the tax payer, we believe it would not be wise or just to
compel eaid land company to open a new street through the black land
to the east of the platted part of Hyde Park, as the black mud would
be carried off, and injure, the fine drives now made.
Unless there is a very urgent general public need of such new street,
we do not believe the tax payers would indorse the spending of any
money for right of way. We believe, however, that the property hold-
ers in Hyde Park are the'most interested, and the best judges of The
necessity of such new street, and the majority there should rule; pro-
vided, it does not throw a burden upon the general tax payers.

' We, the undersigned property holders and residents in Hyde Park -
Addition and vicinity, recognizing the fact that the company controll-
ing Hyde Park Addition has, at its own expense, made all of the
drives now in Hydo Park and has for years kept same in first class
condition, believe the said company’s and our interests would be in-
jured, and the general public’s interest would not be materially im-
proved, by forcing said company to extend a street through the un-
platted land lying between the east line of Hydo Park Addition (as
platted and recorded) and the old fair grounds fence to the east.
The opening of any such street to the east would lead through
black land and cause the black mud to be carried on to graveled streets
now made, and ruin them.
Near the cast line of Hyde Park Addition there is now a public
highway that leads as direct to the Hyde Park school and to the city
as could be secured by turning in at any point on the east side of
Hyde Park.
We, therefore, subscribe our names as opposed to the forcible open-
ing of any such street through the unplatted land adjoining Hyde
Park Addition on the cast.
